I have a mac book pro that is only 2month old and i have reciently been experiencing problems boot osx. It reciently started taking longer than usual to boot and not i am experiencing an intermittent problem where it will take several attempts before it will load correctly.
By this i mean it will remain on the grey background with the white apple logo and requires me to switch it off and then on again.

Can anyone help me identify this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Is it okay after it finishes booting? Any slowness?

Sometimes it hangs for several seconds where it wouldnt before, the latest example was when i put in a dvd. i had to reboot it in the end as finder became unresponcive.

Startup in single user mode ( apple + s keys on power up ). See do you get any errors ( text only output, just note errors some of which are OK ).
Then type /sbin/fsck -f and the type return. See does this repair anything (fsck= file system check). Type logout or power down to exit single user mode.

    Try these in sequence :
    1. Repair permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Restart computer but hold down <SHIFT> key (safe boot mode)
    3. Empty Trash
    4. Restart computer again
If computer is still slow :
    1. download and install AppleJack
    2. Restart computer and hold down <Apple> + <S> keys (single-user mode)
    3. At the prompt, type "applejack AUTO restart" and hit <ENTER>
    4. Let it do its thing and restart itself
If you still have problems, post back here.

The hard drive might be failing. Do you have a backup?

Hi, sorry i've taken so long to reply. having trouble getting in decent broadband in my new apparent. I've tried using /sbin/fsck -f in single user mode but it says it cant be repaired (no errors were shown when i booted in single user mode). Do you really think the HDD would be gone so quick??

I also tried mathepac's suggestions and i came across another problem when i got to the applejack stage with The installer (.mpkg file). It went through all the steps fine but at the end it told me the installation had failled. I had got this problem before with a .mpkg installer when i tried installing a couple of cs5 plugins which at the time i had just put down to a problem with the plugins, could this be a related pfroblem???

Sorry for the late reply but i ended up formatting the drive and reinstalling everything which has solved the problem.
