Bullying

Is it just me or is there a massive double standard in societies stance on bullying? Take for example the case of Phoebe Prince, the 15 year old irish/american girl who killed herself after she was subjected to very serious bullying by some of her classmates. Most people would be shocked and saddened by the tragedy and would no doubt call for the bullies to be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

And im sure everyone knows parents who have children that are/were to some extent bullied and we shake our heads and wonder why cant children just get on! In our modern progressive society we, in the main, consider bullying to be bad!

Now if you google the following peoples names you will get the following results:

Pat Kenny- The Plank, El Douche, Pr*t Kenny, B*ll*cksface
Ryan Tubridy- Gimp, Snake, @sshole
Brian Cowen- C*nt, F*cker, Dribbling Idiot
Mary Harney- Alcoholic, Horse

And you can literally google any common household name and get very similar results.

Since when did this become acceptable? I have nothing against criticising a public figure if they dont do a good job at whatever it is they're famous for. But why do people seem to think thats its okay to attack a persons appearance. To make unfounded allegations about them. To jeer any personal tragedies in their lives. And dont think its just anonymous teenagers behind a keyboard!, its everywhere in society and in the media.

I cant fathom how people who are normally appalled by bullying think nothing of unleashing a vicious verbal assault on another person just because they happen to be in the public eye. These people have spouses, children, parents and friends. And they themselves have feelings.
Am i the only one who thinks its wrong?

Bullies pick on people for no reason. 1/2 of the above people earned their titles.

It's just because others are jealous of their fame. But, who wouldn't be jealous after seeing their wages over the summer in the papers a few weeks back!

Nothing justifies this. But everywhere people call each other names, whether pet names or intentionally cruel ones.

Pat Kenny
Ryan Tubridy
Brian Cowen
Mary Harney

Is it any coincidence that all the people you picked are vastly overpaid people, funded primarily from the taxpayers pocket?

Can you provide some examples of these that we can discuss?

I am not jealous of anyone's fame. I believe that fame is a very over-rated commodity, not least for the fact that it sets you up in the firing line for these type of insults.

However, when you do see the wages of these people, you do also have a right to get angry over the vast sums of money they make - because as I said before - it's us who pay them.

I think that it is safe to say that the kind of person who makes those kinds of anonymous online attacks are the people who bully in real life.

Although, I do agree that not condeming this nasty,
irrelevant abuse signals a tacit acceptance of bullying in general.

its acceptable for a number of reasons.
Take jordon, she happily says some stupid things and lacks any for-sight on how people may view what shes said.. So infact its there own doing and some people have not yet learned to think, before they talk.

If they continue to act talk and generally behave like abominations well then they deserve everything they get...

its completely acceptable to talk about them in such ways....

Plus if we didn't have such, idiots how would we have programs like spitting image :D

They probably got to where they are today, through bullying. But don't worry about them, because their pay packets surely lessen their pain.

Personally. I have.

If someone says something stupid, their pov could be retarded, thats not the same as calling the person a retard, or being a bully for that matter

I hardly think you can compare innocent children or teenagers being tormented to harsh criticism levelled at adult public figures.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I blame the tabloids for making it 'acceptable'.

One will argue that the people who 'bully' online are the people bullied in real life.

Sorry Shano, I wasn't replying to you. I posted an imcomplete reply.Sorry bout that.

I think all bullying is out of order. Public figures should be held accountable, for sure, but I think there is a huge difference between holding someone to account for actions/inactions and launching a personal attack that has no bearing on the behaviour being criticised.

What would you do to bring about this new society that restricts freedom of speech even further than it is restricted already?
