Balancing alloy wheels

    Howdy :)

I need to get the alloys balanced, the steering is shaking fiercely at 100km+

What should I expect to pay and where should I go? The man I normally buys tyres off just has an old fashioned balancing machine. Should I go somewhere that has these up to date flashy fancy ones ;)

Up to date flashy ones are better, also make sure they use stick on weights and not the hammer on ones. €20 / €30 would sort a set of 4 I would think.

Got mine done by fast fit in tallaght a few months ago as was getting vibrations over 90kph. 20yoyos and was all sorted out.

Make sure they remove any old weights before balancing. Had an idiot balance mine by adding more weights with the existing ones. The car ended up handling really badly....got them all removed and rebalanced

Had mine done there as well, no complaints at all. Job done in 20 mins, front 2 wheels balanced and tracked.

I actually was thinking about starting a thread on that very subject.
Nothing boils my blood more than the barely human ape-creature at the tire place hammering lead weights for steel rims onto my alloys and when asked to use stick on weights usually replies with the standard garage line always given when they do something ignorant (which is always) "ahgrandshe'llbeflyin'itahbedefineshtgrandnowthat'llbe20quidthen"
And all I want to do is to fix his head to the balancing machine, spin it round at top speed whilst hammering weights into his head!
    AAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

    www.davemccanntyres.com
    In blanchardstown. Near power city.
They are the best. Take 7eur something per wheel for balancing it.

Whoever designed that site deserves to be shot.

^it is a very annoying site but the guys do their job very well.

My wheels were pretty badly balanced too. Car used to feel it was about to fall apart over 100kmph.

Took it to those guys and got the wheels balanced and tracking done, it fixed it. Even at 140kmph the car was pretty steady with no vibrations coming from the wheels and would track dead straight.

All till I hit the kerb on Sunday and wrecked the passenger side wheels and don't know what more!

How much was it to balance and track it?

They charge 7.50eur or something for balancing each wheel.
    Tracking is 30eur I think.

For balancing you can just head down to their place and they'll do it for you.
For tracking you'll have to take appointment.

Can anybody tell me if it's necessary to balance the rear wheels also? Some people say yes and others say no.......

YES!!!! YES!!!!! YES!!!! ABSOLUTELY THREE TIMES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone who says different is either a moron or a liar, hasn't got a bollock's clue, is talking through his arse and should get a job sweeping the streets, but none of the important ones because he'd make a mess of that too!!!
    Here's why:
Your wheels need to go round smoothly, especially important at high speeds on motorways.
Have you ever seen a washing machine hop across the room if the load is not evenly spread?
That is what happens to your tires (front or rear) when they're not balanced.
You can feel the shudder in your steering wheel, but just because there's no shudder in your steering wheel from the rear tires doesn't mean they're not shaking your suspension and wheel bearings to sh*t.
So, in short, if you're at a garage and they're telling you the rear wheels don't need to be balanced, do what I do: Ask them to put your old tires back on, tell them you're going to a garage who knows what the hell they're doing and tell them that A: you're never coming back and B: you will warn all your friends about this particular bunch of cowboys, cause that's all they are.
I don't know where this stupid, ignorant idea comes from that rear wheels don't need to be balanced, but it's wrong, pure and simple.
And sorry if I sound a bit peeved about this, but 15 years of fighting with Irish garages have left me with little patience with the about 95% of cowboys and idiots out there.

Yes it is. You can have vibration from the back wheels too, though not as noticable as when the front are out of balance. In any case, a wheel out of balance will wear bald patches on the tyre and will put the tracking joints under pressure if left as well as making the car vibrate.
