Please don't judge me too harshly. I was opening my door yesterday and the wind caught it and bumped the car next to me. This has happened before:o, and happened to me, with no damage. However the car parked beside me was old and had lots of scratches and little dents so I didn't know if I did it- there was one mark in the area where my door would have been.. I was going to leave a note in case but then it pissed rain and I couldn't figure out where to put the note. Now I feel awful- obviously I may not have done anything but I dont want the police knocking on my door saying I ran away. I didn't take the reg or anything- wasn't thinking too clearly. Should I have stayed there until they came back?

I wouldn't feel too guilty, if you couldn't tell if you scratched the car or not then you can be sure the owner won't be able to, nor would he care by the sounds of it.

How old was it ? If it was genuinely an old sh1tter with loads of dents and scratches I wouldn't worry too much about it to be honest. What's done is done.

Now some folks consider 02, 03s etc to be old. I'd consider early 90s to be old ;)

Don't know. It was probably late nighties since looked old : it was that kind of matt paint colour look- not shiny or anything.

Id be annoyed if someone dinged my 97 5er. Sure its got a few marks on the paint but I dont need any more and can generally spot fresh marks. Saying that I wouldnt get someone to pay for a door respray if they lightly dinged the door - but if they created a big scrap along a panel, id be looking for at least half the cost.

The wind caught it you say. Well then it was an act of God. Nothing you can do about it now so don't worry about it.

Yeah, I'd have been annoyed if my 1993 Prelude, 1992 Merc or 1993 BMW were dinged like you describe. I had a 1997 rover 400 that was a bit ratty so I wouldn't have been too bothered about her. I'd go ape if someone dinged my 2002 ZT, she's quite minty except for one light bumper scuff and some light scratches on the back bumper.

Huh? So if you skid on ice and drive into the back of someone, you're not liable cos you didn't put the ice there?
