NCT Question

I just registered a Jan 05 car(it's off the road until October though as I'm not taxing it until my old one sells).

If I NCT it in October, am I correct in thinking that the NCT will only be valid until January 11(3 months)?

Also, can anyone find the numberplate regulations in the irishstatutebook as I'm not having much luck?

AFAIK, you can NCT it up to 6 months before its due. In this case it will get an NCT for 27 months.

i think thats only for renewing an NCT, a first one wil be backdated to the bi-anniversary of the date of first registration in this case jan 05 so a new NCT will last only to Jan 2011. That was the case a few years ago with me (nad very annoying)

That would be extremely handy if true, must shoot off an e-mail to them so.
    Ta!

[edit]I checked the FAQ on their new site and it doesn't really clarify:
PLEASE NOTE: NCTS can issue your certificate up to six months early for a first time NCT and three months early for subsequent NCT tests. For example, a car was first registered on the 5th June 2006. The car was due for its NCT on the 5th June 2010, the car is brought for its NCT on the 26th January 2010 and it passes. An NCT Certificate is received with an expiry date of 4th June 2012

Check what is exact date of first registration in Ireland. (it's point "I" on your VRC).
Then book your NCT for less then 3 month before that anniversary.
I.E. If date of first registration is 10th January 2005, then book your NCT for 11th October 2010, and you will get it until 10th January 2013.

Note that NCT is due on the anniversay of first registration which in the case of second-hand imports is not the same as first registration in Ireland.

But OP's car was not imported. Or at least he forgot to mention that.
Besides, if it was imported, NCT due date depends on when was it imported.

If car was imported less then 4 years after date of first registration in the country of origin, then NCT is due exactly 4 years after date of first registration in that country, and then every 2 years from that date.

If car was imported later then 4 years after first registration, then NCT is due from date of registration in Ireland, and then every 2 years from that date (date of first registration in Ireland).

That rules came in recently (i think less then a year ago).
Before it was working the way as you described.

Thanks CiniO, I wasn't aware of new regs.

    [Edit]
This might affect my friends brother who imported 3mths ago so I went looking for this in recent NCT regs but cannot find. Can you point me in the right direction, thanks.
Closest one I found was SI 567/2009 which says that if you only know the year of first reg but not the exact date then NCT will use the day & month of Irish registration, eg if car was first registered abroad in 2005 (date unknown) and first registered in Ireland on 16/07/2010 then for NCT purposes first registration will be considered to be 16/07/2005.

It's imported. Imported a car last October too, but it was an October 03 car so it didn't show me how it worked(as it would have been due for NCT 10/09 anyway).

I never looked in SI's for it.
I found out about it on citizensinformation here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/vehicle-standards/national_car_test
Vehicles imported from Northern Ireland and abroad

Vehicles imported to Ireland from outside the State (including Northern Ireland) must also go through the NCT (once the vehicle is 4 years old or more). This applies even if the vehicle previously received an MOT or any other vehicle test abroad. As it is an offence to drive a car that is liable for testing without displaying a National Car Testing Service disc, if the imported vehicle is already 4 years old or more it must go through the NCT immediately. NCT test certificates will be valid until the next test due date, after which the vehicle (if still in Ireland) must be tested again.

The NCT on an imported vehicle is due on the anniversary date of first registration in the country of origin. (Again, the NCT will only be due once the vehicle is at 4 years old or more). Where the vehicle was already 4 years old or more when imported, the anniversary date is the date of importation. Read more about importing a vehicle into Ireland here.

After you have imported your vehicle and paid Vehicle Registration Tax you receive a Vehicle Registration Certificate. Bring this to your nearest NCT centre and have the vehicle input on the NCT database so that a record of your vehicle is kept. The next day, a test can be booked for your vehicle by contacting NCT (see 'Where to apply').

Also I tested it myself, as I imported a car in July this year.
Car was first registered abroad in March 2003. According to old regulations, after I imported in in July 2010, and done NCT it would be valid until March 2011. According to new regulations, it is valid to July 2012, and that's exactly the case. I didn't even have to ask anyone for it. Just did NCT and got in until July 2012.

I don't know what SI says about it, but if I find it I'll let you know.

When was it imported? In other words - what's the date of first registration in Ireland?

    That changes the whole situation.
So whenever you do your NCT, it will be valid until 30/8/2012.
