Observation when reversing around a corner

Did a quick search and couldn't find anything specific so I said I would make a post about it.

When reversing around a corner I'm pretty sure these are the key observations you have to make starting from when you pull up:

    1. Check left mirror & inside mirror
    2. Indicate in and park up beside the kerb
    3. Stop, handbrake & neutral

    4. Get into reverse check both mirrors left and right and over your right shoulder for your blind spot.
    5. Start your reverse checking left mirror for when to start your turn.
    6. Before start to turn look out back window and then out your right/left for oncoming traffic. (depending on left/right turn)
    7. Turn half of the way while using your left mirror.
8 Repeat step 6 either while moving or stopping.
    9. Complete the reverse while using all mirrors and psychically looking out the back window.
    10. Continue your reverse until told to stop.

My test is the end of this month so I'm constantly going over things to make sure I know them.

Also I'm not sure if this is worth a mention. You will need to stop the vehicle if any traffic is along the main (turning from) road. Either coming towards or from behind.

Would that be right? I'm trying to iron out a few of my own 'niggles' too.

Thanks a mil for that though, very helpful.

A tip I remember from doing my test many moons ago was this.

    - Park you car exactly how you want it to be positioned when you finish reversing around the corner
    - Look over you left shoulder to see the exact point through your rear window where you can see the curb
    - (get someone to help with this) : position a small sticker/dot/mark on the point in the window where you can see the curb
    - this is the point you need to line up when you finish reversing around the corner

Worked for me, passed 1st time

    HTH

    The Reverse

Aim: Good clutch control with slow speed & slow steering
    • Clutch down & select reverse gear
    • Find the biting point
    • 360 deg. observation from right to left (lift your bum off the seat slightly when looking out the back window - looking for kids)
    • If safe, release handbrake, move back slowly
    • STOP when kerb moves into the left corner of your left mirror = Point of Turn
    • 360 deg. observation again with an additional look into the new road
    • Move back slowly, turning the wheel slowly
    • Keep kerb in the corner of your left mirror
    • Halfway around the corner STOP. Again 360 deg. observation with an additional look to the right
    • Start moving back, straightening the wheel as you go
    • Keep reversing until asked to stop.

In addition to this fluctuate between your left mirror, your centre mirror and over your left shoulder.

The key here is slow speed and slow steering. You don't necessarily need to bring your foot fully off the clutch (you might if your reverse is uphill). Keeping it just above the biting point will help you control your speed better, therefore allowing you more time to carry out the observations fully.
