Just a quick question does anyone know how long it takes for the motor tax office to process a provisional licence and for you to recieve it in the post?

I submitted all my stuff to them about 3 weeks ago!

I posted my application and supporting docs on Tuesday.
Got quite a surprise when it was waiting in my postbox for me today!
    4 day turnaround... :)

Now I just need some L-plates.

It purely depends on the local authority in which you are applying to. For instance, in Dublin, there are four motor tax offices which process the whole of the county's motor tax trade. Generally, once you have the (yellow/white) printed receipt of the licence, the licence is printed that day and posted out with the aim of the customer receiving it within five working days, care of An Post.

For other smaller local authorities.. they do not have the manpower to process the application as quick as a larger local authority.

If you have any queries, you should contact your local authority/motor tax office and seek advice on waiting times for the licence to be processed.

Another point is... make sure that your application is fully complete, read the form, re-read it and if you are still unsure, contact them.

Any change in medical history such as receiving laser eye treatment or being diagnosed with diabetes or epilepsy etc, will suffice in additional forms being required, D501 Medical Report Form and/or D502 Eyesight Report form. In Dublin, documents such as passports, birth certs or marriage certs, the ORIGINAL is always required, this is policy with Dublin City Council. The ORIGINAL will be posted back by registered post. With regard to other local authorities, you should contact them before sending a copy to see if that will suffice.

Unfortunately, much to the annoyance of people working in the motor tax offices of your local authorities, the 26 counties don't all sing of the same hymn sheet.. it would be so much easier if they did!
