Comag SL 55 Problem

Hi, I have a problem with my Comag SL55 satellite receiver. For the last few weeks I have to switch it on at the plug loads of times in order to get it started,it keeps showing Load A in the display and sometimes just the red dot light. After about ten times of switching it on and off it finally starts up.What do you think may be wrong,I bought it in Lidl about 6 years ago and it is a cracking little receiver which I use just for the radio stations.
The manual said something about a software update but the dish has to be pointed to a different satellite and I dont want to go messing with that.
I would be grateful for any help, thanks!

it's probably toast. These receivers had issues with blowing capacitors.

you should be able to pick up an equally good cheap receiver for fta tv/radio for less than any repair costs

Power supply dying. Not econmically repairable.

Buy an Freesat HD receiver, even if you don't have HD. You won't regret it. It will make tuning and operation and quality of the SL55 look like junk. Really.

or you could try switching it on with the power button held down on the receiver.

Thanks chaps, for the replies.Just as I thought really,I dont need a HD receiver as I only use it for listening to radio via a stereo system.I have my Sky Plus for ordinary telly, both connected to the dish with a quad LNB.

its the psu, easy fix. most likely a capacitor is fried, poor design but you pay for what you get.

if you open it up, have a look around the psu block on the lhs and take away the cover, you should see some caps which are bust, leaking.

go to a electronics repair shop and get similar caps and just solder them on

    fixed.

of course, be careful with this ****, if in doubt leave someone else at it

In the future more transmissions will be DVB-S2 and also AAC sound, even Radio (all of RTE, inc 12 radio, on Saorsat will need DVB-S2 and might need AAC). You do need an HD box for that even if only on hiFi.

Don't ever attempt to repair Electronics unless you are experienced.

There are lethal voltages even when unplugged.
Safety (potential fire and injury or death) by replacing a component of incorrect rating or poorly soldered or incorrect orientation.

If someone needs advice on how to repair a PSU, then the best advice is "Don't take the cover off!". Don't.

I have professional experience repairing PSUs and I only repair my own now as it's not economical and rarely reliable repair any more.

PSU capacitors must have correct ESR, Temperature, ripple current and voltage ratings as well as correct Capacitance.

It's absolutely not worth repairing a six year old very basic box that can be replaced with a better one for maybe €45.

Thanks again chaps. Do you know of anyone in the Sligo area who would fix it?

Anyone competent would have to charge €50. The repair would not be reliable and you would have a very poor receiver compare to these:

A new box is under €70

Better is Sat4Free. BBC Interactive, auto Tuning, Freesat 7 day EPG http://www.powercity.ie/?brands=GRUNDIG&pages=1&par=10-23 €63

    Or probably better is
Very reputable Online seller €69.70 Inc. VAT at 21%
The Ferguson digital satellite receiver for all Freesat, Free-To-Air TV and radio channels.
Our lowest price high quality satellite receiver with channel number display, which is very useful for radio reception or as a second receiver. You can plug into an existing sky dish and receive BBC, ITV,CH4, Film Four and many more channels from the Astra 2/Eurobird satellite. Remote control included

    Also very good is http://www.saortv.com/shop/digital-tv-receivers/freesat/cat_21.html
    Good support.

Yes I am thankful for the advice but I cant even change a plug which is why I asked if you know someone who might fix it for me in Sligo! I cant afford a new one by the way!

But anyone expert at fixing would have to charge as much as a new one. Anyone charging less than €70 for such a repair (which may not be reliable) is either clueless or doing it as as hobby/charity.

Must be loads of those things secondhand anyway. Some people never even get round to taking them out of the box!

I will put a bit by for a few weeks and buy a new on,Lidl will probably have them at some stage!

Not a Freesat compatible and not as cheap as €65!

Lidl/Aldi Sat gear is now either obsolete (SL 65 etc) or overpriced (HDMI box that doesn't do HD).

you'd probably pick up a used skybox on ebay for less than the cheapest repair would cost.
