Why is it that the oldies* are always more entertaining in the rallies? we had the Wexford rally on over the weekend, and as nice it is to see the WRC and Group N cars take part, nothing brings a smile to my face like a Mk2 Escort going sideways!

What exactly causes this or is it just me? Also have a few snaps if anyone is interested...? There was an e30 M3 taking part too which you don't see too many of.

    Thoughts?

You need to get to Kerry in December for the Historic Rally, where the NEWEST cars are probably early 80s Mantas:D

Last year's winning car, Ray Cunningham's rapid Mini Cooper

Im open to correction, but I think that it's a genuine M3 that was rallied in France. There was no RHD M3 of that vintage made, and was probably converted to RHD with a 325 steering rack.

If you've driven RHD in competition all the time, it can be hard to get used to LHD, especially with the power that the M3 shoves out on a wet & slippy road.....

Bertie Fisher and Austin McHale both converted their M3's from lhd to rhd back in the early 90's

Always look forward to the Classic Rally of the Lakes in Killarney in early December. Plenty of sideways there. Like old times. Molls Gap is always worth a visit for the first stage. Usually wet & greasy.

Cars going sideways around corners is much more impressive to watch than AWD versions going around like they're on rails. That said the AWD models can do it a lot faster.
