    RTÉ has announced the biggest overhaul of its children's television schedule to date.

    The station today unveiled plans for two new programmes strands. RTÉjr will be broadcast for under sixes and TRTÉ for children aged seven to 15 on RTÉ2 from the beginning of next week.

    A number of new characters for children have been introduced.

    Presenter Emma O'Driscoll will have a new puppet friend in Ógie. There will be a new animated series called Punky* about a girl with Down Syndrome and Garth and Bev*, the animated series which has made it on to CBeebies, returns for a second series.

    Happy Valley* will be an animated pre-school series based on traditional and contemporary nursery rhymes and songs and there will be a programme called Grubz Up!* to encourage children to grow and eat fresh food.

    The TRTÉ strand for older children will feature a new programme called The Rumour Room* which will replace The Den.* It will be presented by new faces Katie Van Buren and Jarlath Regan.

    There will also be a daily elev8* programme. It too will feature three new presenters:* Ivan Minnock, Seán Regan and Moldovan-born Diana Bunici.

    news2day* will be presented by Yvonne Redmond from Co Carlow and Aidan Kelly from Co Offaly.

    The new station strands will also have digital radio equivalents in RTÉjr and TRTÉ.

    RTÉ Young Peoples Programme commissioning editor Sheila de Courcy said the new programme strands were "quintessential public service broadcasting for 21st century audiences".

    She said RTÉjr would be a "safe, fun, magical place for children" while TRTÉ would reflect the demands of thje older cohort.

    "These schedules ensure that our audiences are never more than 30 minutes away from Irish production, from stories and output that reflect their immediate world and their lives," she said.

    In fairness News2day has been running for some years now, since 2005 IIRC.

    As for the new names, well this has all the hallmarks of the Children's BBC split into Cbeebies and CBBC - the preschool programming being completely seperated from the older childrens programming.

    It's sad to see the Den name being killed off after nearly 25 years on air (and I guess Dustin and Socky will bite the dust now too). But the name has been living on borrowed time since the RTÉ Branding Machine revved up in 2003 - its practically the only RTÉ brand/strand that doesn't have "RTÉ" in its name and now that's being, for want of a better word, fixed. The only surprise is that they went for TRTÉ rather than the obvious CRTÉ but I guess they want to be different (and not scare away older viewers that don't want to classify themselves as children.). Also The Den we knew and loved has been dead for some years now (really since Damien McCaul left) and in the last few years its been basically reduced to branding and idents around kids programmes.

    Also to note, RTÉ Junior on DAB is also being rebranded RTÉjr. There will apparently also be an TRTÉ radio station launched at some point.

    Is that hunk Ross something involved in this? He should get the Late Late role.

    Even the TRTÉ logo looks like the CBBC one - right down to the "RTÉ" being in the exact same place that the "BBC" is on the CBBC logo.

    I think I mentioned that a while ago.

    Sad to see The Den go after 25 Years :(

    And RTÉ finish their branding of all their services. :(

    CBBC and CBeebie only just go out before BBC 3 and BBC 4. It really has been the case that The Den has been a separate service to RTÉ 2 since 1997 when it started a 12 hour run.

    I couldn't of said it better myself :( I'm really going to miss it.

    I think the names of the strands should have been

    TRTÉ === dRTÉ
    RTÉjr === Ortés
