Do I need to do a language?

Just started a PLC, and it's optional whether I want to do a language or not. I did a language for the Leaving and passed (D2 Higher), but do I need to do it to progress to a University next year or can I leave it?

It depends on a lot of things. Are you going to use your Leaving Cert results or your FETAC results to apply to college next year? FETAC is accepted for a wide range of courses but not all courses. You will have to look up the requirements of the courses you are applying to and see if you need it or not. If you passed a language at higher level for LC you should have no problem in doing a FETAC module for the same language. If you are counting on your FETAC results to get into college next year you should be aiming for as many distinctions as possible. Your best 8 subjects count, so it might be wise to keep on the language for now as it might be a subject you can get a good result in.

I am assuiming you are asking whether you need to meet the additional language requirement for entry to University. If you are using your FETAC award you will be assessed on your FETAC award and not on your Leaving Cert. Unless the University or IoT request a language module in their entry criteria you do not have to meet the language requirement. They are more than likely to request Maths at either Leaving Cert or FETAC level rather than a langauge unless the degree is language focused. If that is the case then they will request a FETAC langauge module.

However to be on the safe side contact the IoT or University you are progressing to and ascertain what FETAC requirements they are looking for.
