New York Giants 2010

Couldnt find a thread dedicated to the Giants so here we are.

Great to get the new season off to a win last night and lay to bed that horrible end of season game last year.

Eli looked in good shape and seems to be picking up where he left off with Nicks, Smith and Manningham. The passng attack can hold up in comparison to any in the league.

The O line looks a bit pourous and could be the reason why the run game was so poor for alot of the game last night. If its not fixed and the run game doesnt operate then the best the Giants can achieve is another mediocre 8-8 finish.

Nice to see the D making some stops. 4 sacks and 3 interceptions is a great way to open the season. The passing D looked alot better with Rolle and Phillips in place and Ross due back shortly. Next week will tell alot more about D i guess.

Special teams is the other big area of concern. On kick-off and punt returns the Giants gave up 210 yards and only made 94 themselves. Stats like that will not allow the team to win many games either.

I remember Victor Cruz from the preseason.

Will he get much a shot this season?
    Special teams maybe?

He has a lot of people rooting for him :)
Local kid, grew up not far from the stadium

He was injured for the weekend i think.

I'm def hoping he gets a chance. Long way to go to make the team though. Apart from Nicks, Simth and Manningham you have Sinorice Moss and last years draft pick Ramses Barden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 305 ✭✭stevemac

Moss is on the IR, Cruz and the other undrafted WR beat out hagan so must be usefull.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭fermoyboy

Cruz will only be used on special teams for this season. Once he settles in and performs well on that then he'll get a shot next season.

That was a good win overall from the Giants but it's obvious they need to work on a few things. Probably the only way you can win when you commit 4 turnovers is when the other team commits 5. Eli's passing was spot on but the WRs had butterfingers some of the time. The Giants looked like they were going to end the 1st half on a high but they let the Panthers right back in there and it looked like things might be going downhill.

The first play of the 2nd half put to rest those fears as Jacobs, I believe, had more rushing yards on the first play then the entire team did in the 1st half. The Bradshaw/Jacobs tandem worked out very well in the second half and hopefully it will continue for the rest of the season. Anyone who had Nicks on their fantasy team had a nice payday on Sunday. I don't think he'll repeat that every week but with the big hands he's got, I think he should be started in all leagues.

The Giants' new punter Dodge was certainly dodgy in his first regular season game. I don't think you could blame him for the blocked punt though, there were some missed blocks there that led to some Panthers getting through. However, he needs to learn how to garryowen the ball a bit more to allow his players to get down the field in time. It was good to see the secondary much improved though. That's been a weak spot for the Giants for a while, even in their Super Bowl year. The D line stood tall in the 2nd half with all the sacks they had and came very close to getting a safety.

Giants crowd responsible for quote of the year! After the blocked punt the stadium as a whole chanted "We want Feagles, We wan Feagles". How many times have you heard a Stadium chant for a punter!!!

Most Giants fans probably remember the NFC championship game from the season when they won Super Bowl XXI. With the windy conditions, the game was practically won by punter Sean Landeta.

Anyone planning on visiting the New Giants Stadium this year?

I'm heading over for the Lions game and can't wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭darragh16

Giants have the credentials to go all the way. If they can stay free of injuries, especially on defense, and once Eli is making good decisions they have a great chance. The O-Line is good and they still have the two big RB's to pound through for yards so there shouldn't be any reason why not. Hakeem Nicks is looking good as a replacement for Plax as well!

Shop around because you can get them at 25/1 with some bookies to win it!

I only saw the first half of the Carolina game, but i was happy enough with what i saw... hopefully they can push on from here!

Well that was fairly poor. Colts showed up alot of issues.

I'd start with the O-line's protection. I know you are not going to be facing Mathis & Freeney every week but Eli had no time to throw the ball. They showed few examples on C4 of how it was taking under 2.5 seconds to contact Eli. The running game was average. Bradshaw did well but Jacobs was terrible. The WR's are hard to blame as caught most things that came their way.

D was ok considering the amount of time they spent on the field. Not stopping the run early was a big issue but Peyton is best in the business at keeping you off balance. Need big game next week to shut down Chris Johnson (copy of the steelers game is a start)

If we learn from mistakes today we can still recover and make play-offs. Least the cowboys and redskins lost as well.

reports on nfl.com that Brandon Jacobs will ask to be traded away today. Might be best for all sides. maybe 3rd round pick as comp i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭JJ

Jacobs has said that he didn't demand a trade and it seems highly unlikely now. He may be the backup RB but I think he can still have a significant role to play in the Giants' offense.

    Hi Lads,

Just wondering whats the best way to get tickets? Heading over at the start of December and hope to go watch them against the Redskins...Been looking at ticketmaster exchange and stubhub but wondering would they be cheaper on the day at the stadium

Wow the Giants were rubbish tonight.

Hard to know where to start. 2 turnovers in the redzone, 2 missed field goals, 9 penalties, it was plain awful all round.

So much wrong. Texans and Bears next up. 1-4 facing the Lions......

To quote Al Pacino " either we heal now as a team, or we will die as individuals"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭DonkeyPokerTour

    Can explain it easily

    26-236

    and

    6 - 3

Ok I'll explain in more detail.

The giants have given up 26 penalties in the first 3 games thats nearly 9 per game!, those 26penalties have cost the team 236yards! Thats 78yards per game! Thats the equivalent of a good running back!

And 6-3? 6ints and 3 fumbles lost in the first 3 games. Too many mistakes is whats killing us!

There's no excuse for giving away so many penalties or for turning the ball over in the red zone.

It's about time some of these players stepped up to the mark and play to their ability.

so many personal fouls. poor self discipline is inexcuseable.

Jacobs and Coughlin clearly not getting along.

Umenyiora is not the player he was. Why did we draft Pierre-Paul if we are not going to throw him in.

O-Line couldnt block an u-12 team.

Eli and the 3 wide receivers are good enough to get us to 12-4 but the rest of the team needs to shape up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

    Lots of injuries now.

O'Hara and Bulluck likely to miss out. Osi is questionable. Kiwanuka is out indefinately.

    Big Sigh.

Pierre-Paul gets his chance to shine i guess.

Huge game vs what looks like a solid bears unit. I fear for us if we slip to 1-3 so i think this is a must win game, especially at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

good win last night. much needed might i say.

D was excellent and the Bears o-line was awful

Our offense was ok. got better as the game went on as they Bears D started to tire and we got control of peppers.

Big issue on offense is fumbles by the running backs and Eli having alot of tipped passes. some are his fault and some are the fault of the receivers. we will surely have to air it out against the texans next week so need to work on it this week.

Matt Dodge recovered from early jitters to punt one or two lovely kicks. On another day he could have had a couple downed inside the 10.

My biggest issue at present is punt and kick returner Reynaud. The guy is plain awful. No confidence that he can even catch the ball and he is clueless in the return game. Time to get someone else to start returning the ball. A chance to get Cruz involved i wonder.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

Would love to see pre season wonder Victor Cruz with more action :)

The punter recovered well, to drop the first punt must have hammered his confidence.
And when the crowd cheer for Feagles in another week, ah it's not easy in New York

That was a brilliant win on Sunday night. The Bears were 3-0 but many said they were lucky to be undefeated. Jay Cutler certainly didn't look like a QB who helped his team win the first 3 games of the season. He held onto it far too long and got severly punished for it. Their 2nd and 3rd string QBs looked better than him on the night.

I hope for the rest of the season Dodge keeps it together for an entire game and not just the 2nd half. I suppose being a punter is a thankless job but you've got one job to do a few times a game and you need to get it right those few times.

I was at the Bears game last Sunday. Dodge was getting untold abuse in the first half for his poor kicking. Very weird game. The offense were so bad in the first half that I actually looked forward to seeing the defense coming back on as they were far more entertaining (to the tune of 9 first half sacks)!!!

Manning eventually got it together in second half which was a relief but still plenty of question marks on him, Jacobs, Bradshaw and the team of WR's. Houston will be a tough game this week, if they can pull it out against the Texans there may be hope but I've a feeling they could be spanked again if they don't get consistency on both sides of the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭JJ

There wasn't too much to worry about against Houston in the end. The Giants shut down their offense for most of the 1st half and much of the 2nd. They didn't have as many sacks as they did against the Bears but I'm sure they were very satisfied with the defensive performance. The offense was a little shaky at first but once they got going, Hakeem Nicks had a monster performance and the Bradshaw/Jacobs duo ran the ball well. Special teams is still an issue with all the penalties they had. The field goal kicking and punting was fine with Dodge being more consistent with his punting this week and it probably helped that he's not doing holding duties anymore.

Very good win. Trying not to get carried away but last 2 weeks were excellent.

Wont have it all our own way against the Lions next week but the season is starting to look alot brighter

was good to see jacobs making legit runs tonight rahter than 5 yrd smashes for td's. he's an asset we've been working on for too long to just neglect cause bradshaw is on form.

I was away on Sunday so I didn't get a chance to watch this until last night. The game was probably a bit closer than most Giants fans would've liked but I don't think the Lions are pushovers this year. The Giants were helped out immensely by all the penalties the Lions commited, especially at crucial points in the game. I liked how you could read the Lions head coach's lips after they commited those penalties just before the Giants scored their 3rd TD. I was pretty cetain he said words that you wouldn't be able to broadcast on air.

Hakeem Nicks didn't have the dominant performance he had last week but the passing was shared all around, especially with Steve Smith. Bradshaw and Jacobs seemed to have the best combined performance so far this season. I'm glad I chose the Giants D on one of my fantasy teams. Even though the allowed a good few points, they also forced a good few turnovers. Dodge redeemded himself with 2 or 3 good punts after fumbling the ball on his first punt. He's got amazing kicking ability and just needs the consistency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

looking at the chargers sunday i am just happy we won. The lions are a vastly improved team this year (basically beat the bears & pushed the packers all the way)

Alot of good signs esp on defense. How great is it to see Osi back to something approaching his best. Secondary is good, really the 1st big play td given up this year.

Dodge is going to be a Giant for a long time to come. He clearly is so mentally tough which is half the battle, and is an excellent punter.

Nicks was disappointing but we have 3 wide receivers more than capable of putting up 100 yards when the need arises. Nice to see Jacobs factoring back in too. All in all to bounce back from 1-2 to be 4-2 is great.

    Bring on the Cowboys!!

Yeah I know man I am very shocked there aint a 2011 New York Giants thread around, last nights game was about as impressive a win as we have ever had!Despite a terrible helmet to helmet flag and the non reversal of what looked like an obvious fumble challenge call giving the Green Bay Packers 14 points, we always looked in control.

Eli Manning just always looked comfortable and used Nicks, Cruz and Manningham to great effect.I still think theres a lot of work to do on our rushing offence-it wasnt until the 4th quarter until Bradshaw made a few big gains for us. Apart from that, we do look like the the best all round team left now imo, the Patriots defence does still look shaky and Baltimore are still relying heavily on Ray Rice and the running game.

The 49ers did look very impressive both sides of the ball against the Saints but apart from the last 5 mins of the match most of the 49ers scores came from turnovers in excellent field position. I may be tempting fate but this does feel like 2007 all over again:D. Once this play happened, I just knew it was going to be our night last night, incredible play!

It's an amazing turnaround for a team that started the year with more talk about how penny-pinching the management were, by how unchanged (and perhaps even weakened) the team was and quiet laughter at Eli's positioning of himself as an elite QB than them being contenders. It's been a very impressive second half of the season by the Giants and if Eli wins a second ring this year I don't think anyone will be able to question his status.

I dont think Eli Manning was ever given enough praise of what he did in 07 not turning the ball over once on all those road wins. Sure our defence was a major reason for success then but I always thought that the media were putting him in the shadow of Peyton. However this year I do think that without Eli, the Giants would've lost the majority of the first 9 games this season and would have ended up playing meaningless games with no chance of reaching the playoffs. I think in the playoffs that sometimes the team with the least mistakes wins the game, so its up to both Eli and the defence to make their opportunites count and do the simple things right. How often have we seen games decided on a fumbled snap or a dropped pass.

If we take the Houston Baltimore game this weekend for example, I would think Houston would have beaten the Ravens if it were not for Jones inexplicably making contact with a all that looked clearly to be going out of bounds on a punt for a touchback and it ended up that Baltimore hung on to win by that touchdown 20-13.

We need to learn from the Saints costly 1st quarter errors in san francisco giving the 49ers a 17 point headstart, if our defence put pressure on Alex Smith enough i think we can force enough errors by him to give us the opportunities to win the game. Im full of hope for the g-men. New York Giants Pride!!!

Im glad we wont be facing the saints, they have had a couple of big wins over us in the last few regular season games. They 49er's are a good team having a very good season, especially when you compare them to last season under Singletary. We could have beaten them in SF during the regular season, so fingers crossed after sunday we can look forward to Indianapolis !!

In all fairness the Packer was already being blocked.
Some poor tackling there by #90, had him wrapped up at the line of scrimmage.

Were back in the big time!Superbowl XLVI!!!Just coming back down to earth after the game at the 49ers. For a while in overtime I was wondering if there was going to be a winner, but at the end of the day as i said before the team who makes the least mistakes wins. The Giants were rock solid in defence throughout, Alex Smith made very few completions in the 4th quarter. Eli had an immense game considering how relaint we were on him to deliver. Our running game again let us down but Cruz made some big plays before the end of the half and everyone played their part well. No doubt about it, conditions will be far more in our favour in the Luas Oil bowl, and I think that if our defence can pressure Tom Brady and play as well as theyve done all season, Eli will have the bragging rights on the Manning table!
