Standard Sky+ box is no longer supplied. You can pick one up fairly cheaply on adverts.ie or on fleabay. Sky will give you a Sky+ HD box which can also work as a standard box and has much more storage capacity. There is no charge for the Sky+ function. Just ring Sky and they will set it up for you.

Can this be done if you are not subscribed to Sky any longer but still have the dish and are using the Skybox as a freeview box? Just plug in a Sky+ box, run another cable from the dish and start recording?

No, you need a subscription for the recording function to work.

I have a sky+ HD box in my sitting room and another normal sky box in my bedroom. Will the charge extra per month if I get a sky+ box, and how much do they charge to install it. Also if I just put a sky plus box in my room with getting the xtra wire added in will I still be able to record while not in (I know that I wont be able to when watching something else already.

If you have a card in the 2nd box, then you should pick up another Sky+ box cheaply enough on adverts.ie or fleabay or donedeal.ie. You hook up that box with 2 cables from the dish. Then ring Sky and ask them to pair the card with the new box and enable the recording function. If you don't have a card with the 2nd box, you will be caught with multiroom charges of €15 per month, but the Sky+ function is free.

I have the 2nd card and I also already have a second box. The only problem is that I dont have the extra wire put in. How much would it even cost to get the extra wire added in?

€20 should cover the length of cable & the fittings for each end. Ensure you get best quality cable. Have a look through the forum and you will find the details on the cable

If I get this Sky+ HD box, will I be able to receive BBC HD without paying a Sky HD subscription?

Yes, you'll receive it FTA on channel 143 and you'll also receive ITV1 HD but you'll have to add that into the other channels menu and you won't be able to record it.

Sky have been known to charge as much as €169 or more. They may have changed their tune recently. See here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056049150

hi all, just reading through these posts, i am in a similar situation. we are moving in my brother next week. i have a sky plus box where i am living now but we are cancelling it soon. my brother only has the normal sky box installed. if i was to bring the sky plus box and the wire with me, does anyone know if i can use it at my brothers? the sky in his house is still goin to stay in his name

    any help will be great
    thanks

Yes, but you will need to ring Sky to have your brother's subscription card paired to the Sky+ box and to activate the recording features.

You can use brother's box without card for free channels (eg. in bedroom).

You might also need to bring LNB (thing on arm of dish) from your dish and swap out, as your brother's will probably only have one output.

I have a Sky + box...I am running a cable from the Sat into another room(separate connection). Two things 1) I have an old ordinary Sky box can I wath freeview on that with my current Sky + card.
    2) If I buy another sky+ box will my current sky+ card work in that as well.

    Presumably from the dish?
I have an old ordinary Sky box can I wath freeview on that with my current Sky + card.
But isn’t your current card in your existing Sky+ box? Removing it will disable recording / playback on the Sky+ box. Freeview is the UK terrestrial system (aerial). You do not need ANY card installed to watch the free satellite channels (such as BBC).
If I buy another sky+ box will my current sky+ card work in that as well.
As above, isn’t your current card in your existing Sky+ box? You will not be able to record on two Sky+ boxes unless you have two cards from Sky and subscribe to multiroom.

Thanks for the above....my issue isnt the recording but will I able to watch the same channels on the new box if the card is put into the new box. The box will be in a room that wouldn't be used that often hence the sharing of the card issue as opposed to purchasing its own card.

Most channels will work. Premium channels (Sky Sports, Movies) and RTE will not work. They will only work in the box that the card is paired with.

RTE along with ALL the non premium channels will work if you stick the card into the second box-you won't get Sky Sports or Movies, the only problem is you have to plug the box out and in again once you remove the card so the box can go back to default UK fta mode.

Cheers, thought RTE was locked but I guess not.

You won't need to power down the boxes. Go to sky news press the red interactive button & when it loads remove the card. After a few seconds change channels & you will have the U.K epg. To go back to the Irish epg just insert the card & change channel.

Hi - i didn't want to be starting another thread on this.

We have sky multiroom at home - would it cost a lot to upgrade to sky+?? We would be keeping the channel package we have already

    Thanks :)

They might do you a deal considering you have multiroom,no harm in asking them.As usual the deals for new customers are better so mention that aswell if you call them.
