no need to do anything for now, when the tax runs out and you don't re-tax it, you'll get a form in the post ( tax reminer)which you can fill out then that its off the road etc.

There is no need to even fill out the threatogram reminder.

True but it makes life easier in the event that you decide to leave the car parked up on street or anywhere else that might be considered a public place.

People in those circumstances have been summonsed for not taxing the car and whilst it is a defence to show that the car was not 'in use' in the relevant tax period, it is much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much easier to convince a district court judge of this if you fill in the form and in many instances doing so prevents issue of a summons.

I don't concur sorry. Being parked in a public place makes the vehicle liable to motor tax regardless of the circumstances.

If it is off the road it needs to be garaged or else parked on private land not on the public road. I don't see how completing a non statutory form would provide any defence.

As we are frequently reminded around here that it's motor tax and not road tax.
What difference would it make where it was parked.

It makes every difference. Park on a public road and you are liable. Park on private land and you are not.
