I am looking to replace an oil fired boiler in a small bungalow. I have calculated size required to be 32k btu. I have quotes from 2 plumbers for boilers 90k btu which are far too big. They tell me that smaller boilers are not available here. Grateful for any advice.

    Many thanks

Have a look at grant engineering or firebird online. The plumbers may be suggesting a 50/90 or 50/70 which can be down rated to 50000 btu. If you are looking to replace the boiler it might help if qualify for the seai grant. Make sure that any boiler you choose has readily available spares locally:)

Smallest oil boiler on the Irish market is a 50/70 but the 50/90 is the one most plumbers and merchants will push. I was a sales manager in a plumbing end heating outlet for ten years till recently. If your heat output requirements are only 32k then the 50/70 will be grand for you but make sure your taking everything into account when sizing, such as the rad sizes, singles or doubles, the size of your cylinder if you have one, heat loss and the overall pipe run. A good merchants will do this for nothing, just drop them in the rad sizes and cylinder size. Also you'll find very little different in prices between the 50/70 and 70/90 boilers but no need to over size with modern condensing boilers as they work best when slightly undersized. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Will check out the Grant / firebird range. Also meant to ask about rads. B&Q do a range which are inexpensive and seem pretty good. Came across Alurad at the selfbuild exhibition at City West at the week end. They are high price (aluminium ) but seem very efficient.
    Grateful for any recommendations.
    Many thanks
