And you'll probably give Fahey 4th pref. so he gets elected again.

I can;t attend OP, but all the best in giving the traitors an earful. It'll fall on deaf ears though. :(

Ardilaun House? That was clever of them. A good long distance between the building and the road, they won't hear a thing....

I might drop by, but good luck either way.

Ah leave them alone they're trying to think!

They have gardai and security there since 3pm today - not letting any unauthorised persons in.

Gym members can still get in....

I have a strange feeling a fair few people will want to work out tomorrow

Guards all over the place there this evening. Not a chance of getting near them. I've heard there will be proper(organised) protests around there though from early morning-disrupting traffic and the likes.

You could always try heading up to Easons and moving around a few books or something!

Do you know that? It is a FF meeting rather than a government one it seems.

I reckon the weather would put a dampener on the protests.

    I hope not.

FF got €5,245,294 in 2009 from the taxpayer under the Electoral Acts as did other parties on a sliding scale.

Plus all the TDs get expenses not to do their job over the next few days but for a love-fest of the party. These expenses are paid by a magic leprauchan pot called the taxpayer
Do you think they'll crash in one of Forty Gaffs' palaces - do you think ministers will actually pay for their stay out of their own pocket when the taxpayer can fund it ??

All the security is provided by the State, where are all these Garda staying, who is paying their overtime?

Ah boo-hoo. We allowed them to get away with these expenses. We should be outraged. We should be up there protesting...

Along with the 8 or so people up there huddled together in the rain with the worst placards ever. Writing is way too small to make out what they are protesting at.

Fine Gael love-ins have the same sort of security measures. Labour on a smaller scale. And WE foot the bill for Gardai overtime and the like there too.

Are we too posh to protest?

We'll also be footing the bill for policing any protests unfortunately even though it's the only way to have our voices heard right now.

I agree that it's an utter disgrace that they need their little love-in "think in" in a fancy hotel when the country is in such dire circumstances.

    What is a TD's job?

Is it to debate and decide policy or say to sit in a constituency office and sort out medical cards?

For the record I have never voted FF, I just dislike the cynicism that seems to be associated with politics in this country.

Back on topic: is there anyone protesting? It isn't actually raining that much it just looks gray out.

I actually wonder what is about Galway that has the population too laid back to ever stand up en masse on any issue.

We had no water for months and there was no fuss or complaint made, most of us have degree of lead contamination in our water supply because FF were too busy fuelling the property bubble to follow the EU lead and instigate a lead pipe replacement scheme. Now our hospital services are being seriously threatened and a protest at the weekend attracted a meagre turnout.

Even small country towns manage much more robust attempts at drawing attention to and changing their circumstances. What is about us that we complain to each and no one else really.

Did anyone protest today? I heard no one did! Jaysus Galway what happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,752 ✭✭✭markesmith

    That's nuts! No-one protested?

If a Palestinian gets sworn at in Israel, you'll have 100+ people marching down Shop Street, banging their drums.

    Priorities...

There was around 8 people protesting across the road from it around 11 this morning. Well they were standing across the road from it anyway...

Why would anyone think that this would be funded from the public purse? It is a private function.

Surely snubbleste, pope buckfast, dolphin city, mcdougal or whatever his name is and the rest of the Galway City forum red brigade were out in force to register their disgust at this gathering?

I drove by at around two, nobody there but a couple of gardai.

I work for a living, but if I thought protest actually achieved anything I might take the day off and go.

Also, you know you're doing something right when socialists are calling you a neo-liberal and capitalists are calling you a communist!

Just an FYI, as you're new here, cross thread posting and goading is very much frowned upon around here. Neither I, nor McDougal had posted in this thread before your post here goading us. I mightn't even have seen this reference to me if I hadn't popped into this thread to see if anything had happened. It's not very fair to refer to posters and previous discussions in other threads like this, as along with being thread derailing and just plain rude, it robs people of a right to reply, by hiding remarks in a thread which may not even show up on their radar.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ You done yet?

Getting back to the the point of this thread....

I think popie above typifies the Galwegian/Irish attitude to protesting when he said if he thought the protest would achieve anything he might take the day off and go have a gawk. It's all well and good coming on here and bitching and moaning about various bits and bobs but credit is due to those who actually got up off their lazy ar$e, took the day off work (if they have any) and went down to protest. It's another black mark against the everyday Irish man who is getting rode senseless by the government, the banks, the EU and is just lying there and taking it.

As an aside-so what if Cowen had a late night? The country is screwed anyway. May as well have a few drinks as the ship goes down.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/taoiseach-denies-radio-interview-impaired-by-alcohol-2336985.html
Taoiseach Brian Cowen denied today giving a live radio interview while drunk or hungover.

Mr Cowen was challenged over his handling of an RTE morning broadcast from his Fianna Fail party's annual get together ahead of the new Dail term.

The opposition claimed the interview came on the back of a late night and prompted concerns over Mr Cowen's ability to lead the country.

Questioned on his way into the second day of parliamentary party meetings in Galway, the Taoiseach denied alcohol was a factor in the heavily criticised performance.

"I'm sorry, absolutely not. I mean, that's ridiculous," the Taoiseach said.

"It's not true at all, please."

I live in Prague now so I didn't hear this, did anyone hear it?

In fairness I listened to it and it's been blown way out of proportion.
The interview was nearly 10mins long and he didn't slur of mumble (anymore than usual!)

I'm definately not a fan of FF or BC but people are just clutching at straws saying he was drunk/hungover. He was hoarse it was an early morning interview. BC is an incompetant leader and FF are a shower of baxtards but this is silly and petty:rolleyes:

He was up until 3 am entertaining the FF's with his impressions. Clearly being one of the lads is far more important than an early night ready for some serious discussion the next day.
