Ok basically buying private and the car has run out out tax last month.

Do I have to send away a change of ownership form before I can tax the car? or is this up to the seller either way. what confirmation will I get after the form is sent?

so in nutshell, I have license and insurance sorted. just wondering what steps to take from there regarding taxing the car.

    any help appreciated

Your OK until you get the new logbook back from the Dept. of Transport in Shannon. Then you have something like 10 days to tax it! Just carry proof of recent purchase for the Garda checkpoints you might meet! They might ask you to produce your documents within 10 days! But the new logbook should be posted back to you in a few days after you send it off! Its up to you to go to the Motortax office and tax it with your new logbook!

legally you are not meant to be on the road full stop without a valid tax disc in the window. most garda will wave you on, especially when you explain that you've just bought the car, but carry a receipt just incase.

when you pick up the car on wednessday, bring with you an envelope and stamp and both go post the VLC there and then, most sellers wont hand over the VLC to you there and then (and rightfully so), and alot forget to post it for a week or so, so inleast this way you get it in the post straight away!

Thanks guys. so you suggest requesting the form to send myself but if I the seller does not agree Ill hand them the stamped envelope ready to go?

also ive taken this quote below from a county council site, does it mean they will only process it if I am paying the tax at the same time?
just that it seems to contradict sending the form and waiting for the logbook before i go and tax it myself as stated by you guys. or maybe im missing something simple hmmm

"Motor Tax Offices can only process a change of ownership on a VLC/new VRC when the seller and buyer has fully completed the VLC/VRC and the buyer wants to tax the vehicle at the same time"

The original owner sends off the VLC to Shannon to get the car transferred to your name. You have two options:
    1. Get the original owner to tax it for you.
    2. Wait for the new VLC to be sent out to you to tax it. This could take a few weeks.

Strictly speaking you should not drive the car without a valid in date tax disc. You would probably get through check points for the first few weeks explaining but you would likely get a ticket if you left it parked in a public place.
Note that you will have to tax it for September even though half the month has passed already, unless of course you park it up until 1st Oct. Then you would have to get a declaration of non use form stamped in your local Garda station to tax car starting in Oct.

I would actually go to the post box with the seller & get him/her to drop it in there & then. At least that way, the form has gone off with your name on the back.
If for example the car was a scam, the 'owner' could fill out your name in front of you & then simply burn the cert & request a new one from the authority leaving you with no recod of title especially if you paid cash.
Its best to do anything that can reduce the possibility of getting scammed nowadays

    He's not scaring you.

Either take the VLC yourself and post it or go to the post box with the owner.

I bought my first car privately and did up a document confirming that I bought the car on whatever date and for €X amount signed it and also got the previous owner to sign it. Ok it may not have had much of a legal standing but it provided some level of comfort.

The seller also wanted cash but I insisted on doing it by bank draft.

You're buying your first car, something I'm sure you've been saving for ages for, just as we all did, don't take any risks when actually purchasing the car.

    What are you buying btw?
