i'm using the latest vlc on windows xp. i have some 3gp video files recorded on my phone. the way they were recorded they're all sideways (i held the phone to the side when taking them). the videos were recorded on a htc desire.

    i have two problems:
    - the sound's not working in vlc. i was under the impression it should place most audio files.
    - i can't find an option in vlc to make the video "rotate right" when watching

    thanks

It should normally pick up the sound automatically, though you might have some luck checking the audio tracks. I've had one or two instances in the past of VLC defaulting to a non-existent track.

Regarding the video rotation, you can find the relevant options under Tools > Effects & Filters (shortcut Ctrl + E), under Video Effects > Geometry > Rotate.

    the rotation option works great.

i don'tk now what you mean by audio tracks though. if i go to the audio menu while the video is running all the options are greyed out.

As far as I'm aware, if the Audio options aren't available, it means VLC can't read any audio track from the file. Which means you're out of luck, I'm afraid :(

See here, and in particular the bit about VLC not supporting amr audio files. Do a search for the FFDshow codec and it should work after installing it. Windows Media Player will also play 3gp files after installing it.
