I've never bothered with it before. Going to be travel to Hong Kong and Singapore next month. We are a married couple and a 2 year old.

It'd be unwise not to get travel insurance, but..

It's got to be cheap. On the other hand, I don't want the cheapest if the cheapest means they don't bloody pay up or try and wriggle out of it.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Have a look at Multitrip.com. The policy is underwritten by AXA UK. They are one of the worlds biggest insurers and are reputable.
You're spot on about not going for the cheapest cover but don't go the other way either by buying cover you'll never use or already have. Remember that if you have health insurance cover may extend while abroad. Your house insurance may cover your luggage & jewelry and it may also cover liability for damage or injury caused to others. A lot of providers now ask if you have health cover and reduce the premium if you have.
Don't worry about insurers trying to 'wriggle' out of claims. They don't. They pay up once the event involved is covered by the policy AND the claim is made within the terms (conditions) of the policy. They have to or the regulators will be down on them like a ton of bricks.
Most disputes arise when the policyholder thinks they are covered for something, say like theft (a standard peril), but haven't met a condition like taking reasonable precautions to safeguard the item such keeping it in a secure place.
I hope I haven't confused you too much :). Have a good trip.

You can't really argue against that. I used them as an example because I have my car & house with them and have always found them top notch. They don't do the travel in Ireland themselves (the UK handle it) otherwise I'd probably have that with them too. Personally I'd prefer to deal locally if ever an issue arose.
At the minute I have a policy with with VHI and I've used ACE in the past. I can't tell you what they are like to deal with claims wise as, thankfully, as the occasion hasn't arisen. Both have decent cover but you have to have a health policy with VHI before they'll give you travel cover.
Just one last point when you do decide to make a purchase. Check out the cost of the annual policy against the single trip one. You might find that the difference isn't that great and you'll have 52 weeks cover instead of 2 or 3. You never know when you'll need it.
