The great New Wave director died today, Chabrol was for my money the "smartest" of his generation - no "existential" musings or naval gazing just a rock solid output of clever crisp dramas and thrillers that entertained as they passed comment on France and the French.

I always remember The Butcher (Le Boucher (1970)) I saw it in the eighties as a young fella on Network 2 (RTE 2) when they used to show a lot more foreign films. RIP.

I have Le Boucher in my DVD collection - great film. A French Hitchcock.

He was making movies up until fairly recently. Not your typical french navel gazing type of films either. They really engage and rake up the tension while throwing light on the French character. He will be sadly missed.
