Had a cow today with red water. Gave the vet a visit and got the injection for it. He recommended to feed her 4-6KGs of nuts a day.

I also used to dose with Treacle and salt but he said there was no need.. Anyone here taken the nuts approach???

Id use treacle and margarine mix when the on an animal that has gone into the late stage of red water (I call it dry murron). The vet recommended the nuts so as to boost up the cow. It would be worth giving all the cows BAYTICOL pour on. This kills the tick that carries the virus.
If you are prone to getting red water then its well worth using the pour on. I apply in spring about 3 weeks after turnout and again in august.

They also recommend treacle and salt for treatment (1 Kg treacle to 250g of salt). Treacle as a laxative, even if animal is scouring and salt to get them drinking.

    Was this animal bought in?
They do say that reared-on-farm animals do tend to develop an immunity.

Bayticol - pouron for treatment, as said already.

(All above recomended in the Journal a while back - I keep cut-outs for diseases like this. Handy in an emergency)

Cheers for that. Bought her in last Nov as an in calf. This is her first time on the ground where she contracted the red water. One to not for future for me.
Cheers for the tip on Bayticol
