Does anybody know can you buy 60GB PAL Model ps3 anywhere in any shop in Dublin? New or used.

If not I will buy it online.

I want this model as it can play ps2 games.

gamestop sell them used for about 240euro and you still get a years guarantee.
you cant get them new anymore because they stopped making them.

You may, just find one, preowned, in Gamestop, from time to time.
They have all preowned PS3's catalogued acccording to model on their system.
They should be able to tell you if they have one in anywhere.
The only thing is, because the 60gb was only available early in the systems lifespan, it means that even on a good day there are few of them out there in the wild, and fewer still being traded in.
Just hope you're friendly with a staff member in Gamestop so they can call you if something comes in.
    Good luck in your hunt!

Yeah just ring around all your local games shops and see if they have any in stock. Although PS2's are pretty cheap these days so you could always pick one up if you can't find a 60gb.

I have one , it'll play a lot of the ps2 games I've thrown at it , but bear in mind , becuase sony skimped on the EU model , its software emulation only , so some games glitch or are too slow to play (tekken tag tournament is one that comes to mind)
http://www.ps3comp.com/view.asp is handy as long as you filter out the japanese and US entries

yeah Its been pretty good with most things I've thrown at it , but make sure that you're checking the EU versions though , not the US ones ;)

The PAL version has the PS2 GPU & uses some software emulation, while the NTSC version has both the CPU & the GPU (I think thats right anyway). Pal is up around 70% compatibility, with the NTSC having 90%.

I'd be more inclined to use a PS2 for PS2 games, to reduce stress on the already shambolic PS3 laser unit, which costs more than a PS2. Getting a replacement laser unit is a nightmare, as the market is full of cheap clones which work for a day or two and then stop. I NEVER want to go through that again...HD loader is the only man on a PS2.

Yeah, just get a slim PS2, mod it so you can play NTSC games, and bobs your in-law!
Easy to do, the console is tidy enough to pop in a drawer when not in use, for extra handiness go to ebay and buy a couple of wireless controllers too! And with a cheap cable you can use your PS2 controllers as extra pads for the PS3 as well.

I'd recommend a Phat and do a hard disk exploit. Those PS2 lasers are ****ing awful and wear out so quick. I've even heard the so called improved Slims get disc read errors as well.

I have no clue how to mod/chip/whatever. Anybody know where can I do it?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

On a phat you don't need to install a mod chip to get the HD exploit working and the only difference is you don't get region free for PS1 games. installing PS2 modchips requires micro soldering skills and is a bitch to attempt if you've no experience.

**Cough cough* I would probably pay somebody to do it for me If I went down that road. **Cough cough cough**

Hmm, if there was, say, someone who could install such a thing into a PS2 slim, how much, theoretically, would that type of service cost these days, in theory like, not that I would you realise, just, for a friend of a friend.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 168 ✭✭justbrian

If I did intend to get it done but of course would never .In theory, and this is just theory as of course nobody would do that, I would pay whatever such a person's fair asking price was. A price that reflects the average asking price for such a task.

    Hmmm....

Thanks for being so precise, I'll pass that info onto my "friend" with the theoretical PS2....

I'm pretty sure there's a memory card exploit available.

I just couldn't be arsed doing it.
    Also my PS2 is missing.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm pretty sure there's a USB exploit. It just involves getting files onto a memory card for all of them which needs an action replay afaik.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 168 ✭✭justbrian

I have an action replay and it's not that simple, you also need pc software.

Ah it's not that bad. Plenty of tutorials with all the links and I'm sure everyone posting here has a PC!.

Agree with this. I have a modded Phat and was running games from DVDR on it for a year and a half or so, and the laser performance deteriorated so quickly that i eventually ended up getting a Slim model which i kept un-modded and re-bought all of the originals of my fave games in my collection. I wanted to make sure i would have them to play in years to come after the laser in the Phat had given up the ghost. GTA SA was the worst. Crashing into walls that you couldn't see because the draw time had gotten so slow that they hadn't appeared on screen yet

The crap laser quality in the phats kind of defeated the purpose of paying big money to get the mod done in the first place. You were basically getting a year or two's free gaming at most before your machine was a brick, but meh, you live and learn....

Except with the Phat HDD exploit, you can retire the laser altogether.

Yeah that was my point too, go with the HDD, don't rely on the laser. It will go tits up after 12-18 months, and unless you get serious value out of it in that time you've wasted your money on the mod.
