    Hello,

I have a very old, large leather bound book called 'Paynes Universal Geography System', it is Volume 1 - Asia.
It was printed by Zachariah Jackson of No.5 New Buildings, Sackville Street, Dublin in 1794. It has quite a few copperplate etchings, one of which is hand tinted. The binding is tight, but the leather cover has some minor damage and has started to fray at the base of the spine.
Interestingly, there is a long list of subscribers at the beginning - comprising of, I would imagine, a large amount of very well to do people of the time (quite a few Lords etc.)

Has anyone any idea of approximately how much this book would be valued at?

    Regards - Dan

Looks a rare bird alright and if you're thinking of selling it be sure it goes to the right Auction house - Adams in Dublin http://www.adams.ie/ or Mealy's in Castlecomer http://www.mealys.com/ . Cathach Books in Dublin http://www.rarebooks.ie/ might be able to give you some idea of its value.

    Thanks Judgement Day,

I'm not thinking of selling it, but just would like to know an approximate value for it. I'll have a look at the Cathach Books site....

    Hi,

Dublin printings tend to more valuable and more sought than their British counterparts for example, mainly due to small number of copies printed.

This being illustrated and looks to be in decent nick would fetch anything from 400-800.

I did find some trace of it ...

But that appears to be some form of supplement, unfortunately my German ist nicht so gut! Another thing to note is that, that German seller may not be entirely aware of the true value of this book, it's often the case you can find Dublin printings abroad considerably undervalued.

You might try contacting the seller and clarify exactly what he has, ask him for a page count and some scans.

If you had this as a complete set (all vols) and in that condition, that would easily take you into 4 digit territory. It's a nice book.

With all that said, keep in mind that everything, books included have come down in price.
