Compressing Large Files (5GB)

I have a load of audio production files I'm looking to archive. Its about 5Gb worth of data in several folders. I was hoping to just compress the root folder but it stops after 2.66GB and freezes.

Is there a limit to the default archiver on Mac? Is there any alternatives that might work?

    Thanks

Maybe split them into smaller parts or is that what you were trying already?

I'd like to see some advice from other users as I'm interested as well!

Can't really split them, would mess up the file system quite a bit. Its happened in the past!

This works great but you have to organize them all in one folder - I used iTunes to do this.

Archive the folder normally and then I used MacHacha to split the archive.

I had 68.47 in my whole music folder and it split it into 33 2 gb archived folder.

You must have misread, its all organized in one folder already. When I try to archive it stops at 2.66gb.

Thats why I'm wondering if there's any other archiver for mac that might work.

odd it says several folders above?

No there is no limit as I said I archived 60 odd gb worth.

Yes there are several alternatives - google and choose which suits your needs best.

does it give an error or does it just stop? are you low on space?

I've loads of space on the drive.

"Ask google" isn't exactly what I was looking for... I've already searched and couldn't find an answer, hence the reason I'm asking here.

You seem to know some of these alternatives, why not type in the answer instead of this roundabout bull****... Would save us all a little time.

I had already done that and found 2 options, both are over 60 euro... Not looking to spend that kind of money for a 1 off job, was hoping for something a little more free.

I apologize for acting like a dickhead but it really gets on my nerves when people jump in a thread without the intention of answering a question.

Do me a favor, leave the thread alone, leave it to someone that is willing to help by providing me with the name of an application that will suit my needs. There's plenty of other people on the interwebs to bother.

    Thanks <3

jesus christ smartarse he told you how to do it if that dosnt work fine, no need to jump down his throat

stuffit expander might be able to do the trick and you can find it for free online but iv only ever use it for unarchiving so i cant be sure

edit; also my reading of his reply says that you need to have all the files in one single folder not a load of folders in another folder but it might not

He didn't tell me, he pointed towards me towards google, that was my problem. The apology in the last post was sincere though it appears it doesn't come across that way, bad day...

Stuffit Expander is an unarchiving utility. The deluxe version (something like 85USD) will do the trick but again is crazy money for a 1 off.

I have all the files in one folder, I called it the root folder. Should have been clearer on that. My bad.

    Thanks for the input though.

Have you tried repairing the file permissions? If the permissions are messed up for a file or if a file is marked as locked it can cause problems with archiving.

is a sincere apology? The only thing that's sincere in the above post is the sincere nature of your attitude problem.

OT: Have you tried moving away from the files so that permissions etc. will not be an issue? If you were to make a bootable Ubuntu flashdrive and run that OS, navigate to the Apple Partition on the HDD (viewing with the native file manager of Ubuntu) and then compress it from there, that could solve your issues.
