Recycle Bin is Corrupted

    Hi All,

I have am receiving the following error message: "The recycle bin on \\network_drive\usb_share is corrupted. Do you want to empty the recycle for this drive? Yes - No

I tried clicking yes - and no, but the error message always comes back. The drive is a usb drive plugged into the back of a network drive & is mapped as drive M in windows.

I have tried the following to try & resolve the issue:
    • Disabled recycle bin on mapped drive
    • Disabled recycle on all drives
    • Run chkdsk
    • Tried to take ownership of $recycle.bin folder - received "Access Denied"
    • run cmd "rd /s /q M:\$Recycle.bin" as elevated command
    • swapped usb drives

The error message always returns. The fact that it is there even when I swap usb drive would indicate that it is not a drive issue, but a windows issue (I think)?

Would there be a registry setting corrupt? I would really prefer not to reformat, but this is just piddling me off :-)

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

    I'm running a laptop with Windows 7 64bit.

    Thanks in advance,

    SH

Does the PC that the drive is plugged into report that the Recycle Bin is corrupted?

    Hi Odaise,

The error message is a windows error message - that is reporting the recycle bin as being corrupt. It only reports the recycle bin on that particular path is corrupt. There is no errror message received for other drives.
Even when the usb drive is connected directlly to the laptop, there is no issue, which again leads me to believe that there is a residual "link/ setting " to an old usb hard drive (maybe?) - I've had several plugged into the network drive over the years, & not the actual disk.

Many thanks, for trying to help.

Can you verify that the computer that the drive is plugged into doesn't give the same error?

What permissions does the host computer share the drive with?

The drive in question is a USB drive plugged into the back of a Network drive. The error is only reported on my laptop - I have access to another laptop which can access the recycle bin, without any error.
What permissions does the host computer share the drive with
Not too sure how to determine this, but the Network drive is one of these: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=587. I think the device is mounted using a Linux method?

    Thanks again

OK, after doing some more research, I've managed to solve the issue :-)

I've seen a few other sites where users had reported similiar issues - normally associated with having My Documents/ Pictures/ Music on a network drive. I reset the location of My Music folder to the default setting & then pointed the location back to my mounted, network drive - problem solved.

I'm presuming it was a registry setting that got confused, but cannot say for sure.

Hope this may help someone else.
