It's actually a very entertaining and enjoyable film which expands on a number of moments which [rec] cut short, far more of a back story to it also. It's not a patch on the original but does enough to stand out on it's own.

Quarantine is officially a remake of [REC]. As Darko noted though, it's a great film on it's own (as many remakes can be). I found it best to watch it as it's own beast, certain moments (lady in the nightdress comes to mind) were executed better than the original but for the most part but in general it should not be watched as a remake. Think of it more as the same concept except incorporating American ideology rather than Spanish and you're on the right track.

I really don't think its anywhere near as good.

But then I have a love for foreign film.

It's not anywhere near as good as [REC], no question. But when held up against the other tripe churned out by the American horror movie machine of recent years? Citizen fookin Kane! :D

All just depends on what you measure it against and in my experience, measuring a remake against the original may be the obvious choice but never really the wise one.

Agreed, it's nothing like the American remakes of Japanese horror.
