Personally i love going in my sniper role it depends on the person though. If its your first airsoft device then i would say go with a aeg.

It's a vastly different role in airsoft than you may be accustomed to in computer games or tv/movies. I'd agree with Andy and strongly suggest you get an AEG first. Once you have an idea of how to play, and where you fit into the roles of the game, you can consider trying the sniper role again.

I always try to lead people away from getting a bolt action rifle or a support gun as their first airsoft gun. They're far too restrictive in how they're to be used to be of any use to beginners. I'd consider them to be an intermediate skill level choice at least.
Try a long rifle, like the M16, G3, G36E, M14 etc. They'll give you a good, accurate platform but have the versatility of being semi/full auto AEG's with good magazine capacity. This will let you play in an assault or marksman role until you know how you feel.

I'll refare Price to this thread. His first airsoft device was a JG BAR-10 Spring Rifle. There is no need to buy an AEG first. If you want to snipe, go for it. Its not like Modern Warfare though - You cant jump around and outgun people with AEGs in CQB situations. Its all about sitting and waiting, moving slowly and ambushing unsuspecting players. If you an avid sniper fan - i.e. you know what a .338 Lapua is, You know that "Barrett .50cal is not the universal name for the M82 etc and you know that the Cheytac M200 is the real name of the "Intervention" then I say go for it.

Right - here in Ireland we have a 1J limit, which means that people's side arms can have the same range as your bolt action sniper rifle. Their primary's also have the same range, ontop of the full auto function.

Sniping in airsoft - it's different than real life, and almost completely unrelated to games/movies. But that doesn't mean it's not fun. But it is an acquired taste. A bolt action rifle is dedicated in what it is - there is no versatility in it.

With an AEG, on the other hand, care can be taken to make it as silent as possible, so that you can try out the sniper role, while still retaining a versatile device...should you decide that you hate sniping. It makes more sense for us to recommend an AEG as a first buy, because if it's a first buy you want something that gives you the most for your money. You can snipe, you can try out the marksman role, you can engage in CQB, you can do all sorts that simply is not feasible nor practical with a Bolt Action rifle.

Magic is right though - you do not have to start with an AEG, but I for one would definitely recommend it until you've found your footing, and can see what way you would like to play

Knowing what they are in real life isn't really a good indication of whether you want to fill a sniper role or not. I knew all of that and I haven't got any of the will to be in that role. I'm not a run-and-gun type person either.
From experience in the shop, I've found that the majority of people who think they want to be a sniper, don't really know what they're letting themselves in for in a game scenario. I always suggest a long-rifle AEG, and try it out from a marksman role first. To be fair, 90% of the time I'm right, and I'll hear about it from said players when they come in next.

Sniping is a very limiting role in airsoft, primarily revolving around stealth and acting more as a spotter, a lot of the time, than as anything aggressive.
You don't really get the option to join the fray if an all out war kicks off in the middle of a building, or even a remotely built up area.
Using a long rifle, configured for marksman style use (think Semi-only, fixed magnification scope or dot sight and a bipod), the player can engage in ranged tactics akin to those employed by a sniper, but run in for closer support if the game style suddenly shifts, or if the player is simply not liking the ranged tactics as much as they thought.

If it's your utmost desire to get a bolt action rifle and nothing else, by all means do it. Who are any of us to stop you? A question was asked, and this was my experience in such things responding. Nothing more.

Oh, and if you can find a JG BAR10 in stock for sale, I'd do the lotto because you're clearly exceptionally lucky.

from my experence i found before i played the sport, i wanted a sniper rifle as the idea of it sounded cool, when i actually played and went to buy my first gun i went for an aeg instead. its your money at the end of the day but in my opnion you get more fun for your cash with an aeg.

or save up loads and buy both an aeg and sniper and have best of both worlds..

Knowing what real sniper rifles makes you suitable to be a sniper in airsoft....

    *chuckles*

*resists urge to post the same reply she adds to every topic of this type, for the OP to ignore it and do what they want anyway*

You could always get an m16 and replace the carrying handle with a second hand sniper scope , then add a bi-pod and bob's your cross dressing aunty.
You now have the best of both worlds;)
