keep reading on these threads about ' rooted' android phones and the likes.

Can some of you kind folk out there please explain (as simply a possible) a few things to me?

What exactly is a rooted phone?
in what way exactly will it benefit my phone by rooting it?
Is it dangerous to root it (ie, will it mess up my warranty?)
Is it difficult to root it?

Now, assuming my questions are suitably answered to persuade me to root the phone, how would I begin the process of rooting the phone?

I like to tinker and tweak with things, so a (bit of a) challenge its no problem!

    Cheers

    http://lifehacker.com/5342237/five-great-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone

Not dangerous if you pay attention and do it right. Will appaerently void you're warranty but if you need the warranty it is because of faulty hardware mostly so you could deffo argue and get it paid for.

    getting started choose a rom - http://lifehacker.com/5596108/how-to-choose-the-right-android-rom-for-you

once you pick a rom - go to that roms wiki page or forums or irc and follow instructions.

I use and would recommend Cyanogen mod (CM6 (2.2)).

Just a quickie response as I'm off to bed.

II'll have more tomorrow. There is a 1Click root available for the galaxy s, google it and it will come up easily. It's insanely easy. Rooting offers more possibilities with apps and customisability.

Secondly I think the custom rom mentioned above is a desire only one, there are only a few 2.2 roms for the sgs, and the 2.2 firmware is kinda buggy right now, wait for the end of September release of the official one.

Sent from my Galaxy S :-) forgive typos.

Root just gives you admin access i believe. Some of the apps on the market will tell you that it requires it. If you want to see the paid apps on the market, download Market Enabler and pick any option (resets when phone turned off)

I rooted mine using the 1clickroot method. Ran into a problem when trying to get into the recovery console. All the documentation suggests that you power off then press home + up + power and release the power button once the Samsung logo appears. This did not work for me and I came across other people complaining about this on the internet. Then came across this video and method 2 worked for me. Forced the phone into recovery console where I could root it.

    Hia, funny club.l

I googled, 1 click root, and it give me all the info I needed there (took about 3 mins tops)there is also a few videos on youtube, but I got all my info on my laptop, so sorry mate, but don't have a link to paste as I'm using the phone to type this.

I am with three by the way, jumped ship from O2.
O2 had been ripping me off for a few years before I finally twigged about threes fantastic price plans! (thats for another thread though)

So far, so good, no reception issues, always have access to 3, and as a closing note, I find the sgs much more superior to the iphone (coming from a guy who had the 3G, and the 3GS!

3 let me choose between any phone, including this one, and the iphone 4, but so far, I have zero regrets going for this one...

    I ain't no sheep!

There is also an app on the market (i think) to unlock your phone from your mobile operator.
You need a sim from another operator to get the unlock prompt to enter the code

I've a strange problem with this 1 click lag fix, I go into the recovery console upload the zip file and it says success rebooting phone, then I go back into the 1click app and it tells me I still have to root my SGS, any ideas i'm baffled, using the exact same phone on 3 as you Glucky?
