Simple question, not so simple ans

What would it take for GAA players to respect Refs, just as they do in Rugby ?

All starts at underage if you want my opinion. I love both sports, but the abuse of GAA refs REALLY turns me off the game. I have a 6 yr old son, and I know where I'd like him to start.

    Opinions please . . .

To be honest i think the rules of the game are a big factor - in rugby everybody knows exactly what they can and cant do and the referee's own interpretation isnt often a huge factor.

IMO in no sport does the referee have as much leeway to interpret the rules himself as they do in GAA matches - If the same game was refereed by two different referees with contrasting styles you would get two incredibly different games and in a lot of cases differet results

In rugby all players know exactly what is allowed when it comes to tackling, for example, whereas in the GAA a tackle according to the rulebook is purely an attempt to play the ball away with your hand when the opponent is hoping or soloing it or a shoulder-to-shoulder charge when competing for possession. But as we all know if the game was refereed according to the rulebook you'd have fouls given for almost every challenge you see at inter county level

When you go out to play a game you honestly dont know what to expect from a referee if you hadnt had him before, whereas in other sports you know almost all referees will make the same calls in a lot of cases.

The way i see it the rules leave referees open for criticism as there is so much personal interpretation involved in making the majority of decisions in games, just my 2c worth

Agree 100% with what Ian says, mostly players' frustration is down to inconsistent application of rules that are always chopping and changing.

Its Gaelic that changes the rules every year. Hurling rarely changes the rules.

What would it take? The GAA / CCC handing out severe long term bans to any player caught abusing or not respecting the referee and not reducing them.
