I was thinking of a 12 month RTW trip, From what I've read a budget of E16,500-17 is enough for a single person, the only probllem is that I would not have it all at once, I was thinking of setting off with about 3-4,000 at first and then would have about 1,200 added into my Bank Account each month thereafter. From anyone who has done this before, do you think that makes it more difficult or is it an advantage in tht it forced you to budget moee, also do you think this would reall restrict me in the places that I could visit?

I haven't done it. But €1200 a month is peanuts in a country like.. Ireland.. or most of north america, western/northern europe, australia, etc etc. Can you imagine travelling Ireland on 17k? You'd barely survive on it!

I reckon if you plan your trip well to start off in the richer countries when you have a lot of money, then head to poorer countries where 1200 could last you a year. Or linger around the poorer countries and let your bank balance grow.

I was thinking if you were to start in Australia/NZ if you had 3-4,000 and then as you said travel to the poorer countries, like SE Asia and let the balance add up do you think it is possible to do it this way?

It's definitely doable. As long as you know you're definitely going to get that money every month. I travelled with an average of €1000 a month. That included 9 month in South America (places like Argentina were €1500+ a month), one month in Aus, and the rest in Asia. Just cut out the English speaking, expensive countries. You can do them when you're old anyway. Best to do the exciting, but more challenging, and cheaper options when you're young.

i spent probably 5k in 2 months in australia and that was taking it easy.

If you were to spend a lot of time in the poorer places, do you not think you'd have enough left for the more expensive places later? Also, do you mind if I ask other than accomodation, how do you spend more than 3k a month?

It's very do-able OP. It just depends on how much you move around. If you're moving about, staying in hostels, eating out and partying every night, you'll burn 100 euros a day in the western world. If you go couchsurfing for a week in Africa, you'll struggle to get through 50 euros in a week. World average? If you're not taking many guided tours or adventure trails, and hitting 2 or 3 towns a week, I'd budget 1500-2000 euros a month. Sounds good, just keep access to a 1000 euros in case you need to come home.

If you were not really to socialise at all, just move from place to place, if your only expense was really a little food and accomodation, I think you'd survive in Ireland on 1,200 a month. If accomodtion was your main expense how much is a hostel in most places for a week? I do think you'd find them here for 5-600 a month?

To be honest I think it will work out better for you in that you'll be restricted in what you can spend. A lot of people head of with grand ideas that never come to fruition because they blow too much money or make a mistake budgeting for a certain place.

IMO Oz and New Zealand are the 2 places you need to be careful in this respect. Be vigilant, IF after a few weeks you're spending too much money don't ignore it...Just get out of there and go somewhere where you can stretch your funds a bit more.

It's easily do-able and a good incentive if you ask me to be careful at the beginning of your travels hence starting a good habit. SE Asia would be a good place to start ;)

Spend 4-5 months in SE Asia and let your balance build up. Theres a lot of countries to see there. Most only think of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. There is also Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, Singapore(tough on the pocket though). There's more than that too. You could easily do these places at around €200 a week.

If money is low, skip Oz (no offence to the Oz lovers) and go to New Zealand. Everything there is roughly half the price of here and a far better and more diverse country than Australia. Plus the locals are a bit more friendly! Two months there and then on to what will be the best part of your trip, South America. 6 months here will give you a good perspective on the continent but there will still be a lot to go back and see. €1000 a month will do you here. It might be €1500 some months but then others will be only €500.

Try and share as many things with other travelers as much as possible. Taxis, dinner in the hostel, bottles of booze, wine etc etc.

    Enjoy!:D

Just avoid Oz/NZ/US/Canada altogether and travel to cheaper places and you'll have more than enough. It depends on how adventurous you want to get I suppose but Africa, Asia and South America are all well doable on a reasonable budget.
