there is something wrong with vista on my dell laptop. It wont allow any drivers to be loaded or windows update to run.

I have tried a few things with no joy.

I was just wondering if i use the recovery partition , can i restore vista to its start state? and will i loose all my files?

Failing that if anyone can think of a solution as to why my drivers wont load (various USB devices) I would appreciate your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance

    Eoin

If you use the recovery partition, you may well lose your files. It depends on whether your recovery partition is configured to re-image the hard drive (you lose everything) or just re-run the Windows installation (your old installation gets shunted into a directory called Windows.old, from where you can recover files).

Assume the worst and use a livecd of some form to back up your files before you use the recovery partition.

That said, I'd suggest using System Restore first and seeing how you get on with that.

You'll need to reinstall any programs you want to use, but all your old files and documents will be there.
