I'm in need of a bit of help. A few of the lads were just talking about motors here in work, and I had to hold my hand up and say, "Sorry lads, no idea what you are talking about!"

My knowledge of what goes on underneath the bonnet of any car is as close to zero as you can possibly get, but I would like to do something about that.

Anybody recommend how I would go about just learning the basics of how a car works, just so I can at least know what the hell is wrong with my car if something goes wrong? :o

Earlier this week we got a list of night courses the local Institute of Technology was doing, and there was a Motor Maintenance course on there.

I did one of those a few years ago. As the demo engine was from a 1964 Anglia (998cc petrol I think) and I was driving a 2.0Tdci at the time, it wasn't that relevant for the engine bits but I did find it quite enjoyable, and fairly informative. They may have moved with the times by now - although I reckon it will still be the same guy and same engine in Ringsend for the next few years.

we did something like that back in school with our engineering teacher, great crack at the time and good for young lads to learn something they'll use again. should be more courses like that on offer

That's easy, it's a special cloaking device found only on Audis. Its purpose is to make the car as bland as possible. With this new ________, Audis will now be blander then lettuce, with the new A4 having a previously unheard of Bland rating of -2.34.

The internet eh, is that part of the engine??? :P

Going nowhere near my own motor thanks. It works at the moment and I'd like to keep it like that.

I'll have a look at that howstuffworks site in a while, but I guess the only way to really get comfortable with anything is getting stuck in.

Hi Billy, your cousin Phil runs a garage near the Vic called The Arches, Ricky Butcher and Minty work there, surely you must have noticed this over the years

While you're at it, tell Phil to stop smoking crack.

People should definitely go for like Ford because they have 'kinetic design' which is way nicer in a bottom of the range focus than a bottom of the range Audi.
