From what iv learned, having to look into it myself (tried to get grants as a mature student) is that to claim maintenance as a mature student you have to be living out of home 10 months prior to your application (and evidence to support this). For BTEA you need to be on jobseekers allowance for a period of time (not entirely sure on the time as I didn't look into BTEA).

It does seem to be a pain but that's the way the system is working at the moment. I myself cant claim maintenance for my first two years of study so will have to fund them myself.

You don't have to 'give up' work, but I would try think about moving out of home from now until next year when you put in your application for a grant. At least you can say/prove that you are a independant mature student and claim maintenance. If you work from now until then you can also build a little nest egg of savings for yourself too.

    not true.

you have not applied for a grant for the 2011/12 year so no one can put their hand on heart and say your 100% ineligible.

eligibility is based on income earned in the year before the application so this will be 2010 for you.

as for moving out of home for 10 months:confused::confused::confused:
you had better do the maths is the grant .........which you might or might not get.......going to be financially worth in excess of the rent and associated utilities you will have to pay out....be a shame for example to spend 8k on rent etc to get a grant for say 6k.....

you are either under 23 or over 23 and living with parents where both your income and theirs will need to be assessed
    or
you are over 23 and living in your own place where your income will be assessed assuming you dont have a partner....

the eligibilities change from year to year - no-one can say now what will change for grants in 2011/2012

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
