Choosing the correct set of irons, what factors to consider?

I know custom fitting has been spoken about on a number of occasions here in the past. But i was wondering what you regard as the most important factors with regards to irons- shaft, clubhead, grips.

Would it be safe to say that once you have the correct shaft you're on a winner?

Not necessarily, different heads can play differently with the same shaft. The shaft is the most important component alright, but its "that shaft in that particular clubhead" thats important. You have to see how that combination works not the individual components.

Not sure if I made that clear or not :)

Ya i understand exactly what you're saying. and thats what i was wondering too, is each individual part equally important or are some more important than others

I picked up a set of Ping G10's with Super Light S300's shafts (by accident) and they are a good club and half longer than my previous set with a much higher ball flight. The majority of it is the shaft though as I have never come close to hitting the ball as high or as far with my irons.

I mentioned in another thread that i was fitted for clubs a few weeks ago by Foregolf. I was recommened Cleveland CG7 irons with Nippon NS Pro 950 stiff shafts.

So i was wondering suppose i got a set of Titleist, Mizuno, Nike, etc with these shafts would they work for me. Or would it be a case that a different shaft may be needed for some of those models.

Basically i'm wondering is it one shaft that suits for everything or are other factors equally as important.

    What ye reckon?

I must admit I find this very interesting and is something I've never quite understood. Could someone explain exactly how the shaft of your irons effects things like ballflight (low, mid, high) etc. and why therefore the shaft is the most important and individual component?

You need a shaft to match your swing speed

Aster for me the also it has to look nice when I look at it
Return some heads are just not easy on the eye

Why do you want to go with something other than what's recommended

For price reasons. I've seen a set of 2nd hand Mizuno for €250 with the recommended shaft. so was considering these as it would be a saving of €400

Ok, O'm playing devils advocate here but I wouldn't spend money on an expert in fashion recommending me a pair of cotton trousers to go and buy a pair of jeans cause they're the same recommended material.

The fitters look at the whole package. The weight of the heads and how they combine before making a decision. Why spend that much if you are prepared to compromise?

Combination of a number of things, shafts in particular but also head design and lie angle and most importantly SWING WEIGHT.

Justlike the grip where you play with the strongest grip that works then also its the heaviest swing weight that works.

Be careful if making a large investment in new clubs.

Talk to and buy from a good club pro. Buy a secondhand set from him explaining your desire and you will have a friend who will trade back and give good advice.

Nothing wrong with the big franchise shops but the right irons could take years and loads of money to find on your own.
