    Hi Everyone,

    Hoping to get some advise,

In the club that I am training in I am by quite a good bit the smallest guy in the club. Im actually quite an adverage size about 77kg.

However im always sparring and rolling with some big dudes that out weigh me by 10-30kg.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips, as Im finding alot of techniques simply dont work on these guys.

Find the same with take downs and throws.

    Cheers.

I feel your pain, there's nothing worse than having some big guy lying on top of you in scarf hold!

I'm very much a beginner however I tend to do well against the more experienced (more experienced not experienced!) guys because im 105kg and lots of muscle. What I've noticed is that I tire a hell of a lot quicker than the smaller guys and fast small guys are a nightmare for me. However if I get the small guys in side control its extremely easy for me, they literally can't get out and I use that opportunity to get my breath back.

One thing I noticed is because I've a big neck and traps and because I've a wide back that I'm a prime candidate for rear naked chokes (In fact all the times i've been submitted even by the experienced guys has been RNC) I also seem to tap a hell of a lot quicker. Like when im in the process of getting a RNC on a smaller guy he seems to have time to move and adjust and escape whereas the minute someone even tightens the area around my neck I am about to pass out because its very easy to restrict space to a guy with a big neck so I tend not to be able to get out.

Dont know if that helps at all

John Kavanagh teaches a lot of "Bigger Stronger Guy" (BSG) Stuff and I had a look for a very informative article that he wrote about the subjest but I couldnt find it.

It talks about always being on top, you never wanna be stuck under one.

It often takes bursts. Past couple weeks we have been doing rolling and i've recently been moved up to adults class so i know how you feel. I'm about 8 KG lighter than you though!!.

Mainly all i'd say is use your hands alot or distract. If they have to think of something else they're often not expecting a bridge and shrimp.

Almost tapped my teacher out the other night in a guillotine from half guard and just as i was reaching the other hand in he anticipated it and as soon as that i'm gone.

It's fantastic when stuff like that happens it just motivates you more. Keep at it! rolling tomorrow for me anyway looking to get the c*nt back :D

One of the best bits of advice/punishment JK gave me was he banned me from triangling anyone who out weighs me. The reason is more a long term thing, in that he wants me to be able to use my neck in a few years.

As an add on, i was also advised to never use closed guard, all open guard for sweeps etc, very easy to be stuck under all that weight.

i've never had that problem because i'm a big chunky monkey, i find rolling with nonstop little cardio machines harder than the big lads

    Plan A: get bigger

While you're doing that, plan B:

    1. Forget any submission off your back - the goal is to sweep or at least get enough space to force a scramble.
    2. Taking the back is your friend.
    3. When you get on top, capitalise on it. Smash him into the mat, hold him down and bake him. Let him burn up trying to escape. Only look for submissions once he's panting.

So, in summary, on the bottom be fast and furious, on top be as boring as you can.

Im actually quite an average size about 77kg.

To arrive at that average did you include children?

Adults should be more than 90kg.

Yes, 77kg is almost exactly 12 stone, while 90kg is about 14 stone. It depends how tall you are, but 77kg would be a bit closer to the average I would think.

Depending on a how much a bigger a guy is than you, saying that "technique simply doesn't work on them" may mean that you are applying your techniques incorrectly.

Granted, weight is a massive advantage in some situations, but your techniques should work against most people in most situations. You have to time your escapes and sweeps very well. Remember - it's easier to stay out of his mount than get out of it.

I'm 17, 10 stones and 5' 8", last night I grappled a 24-28 year old who is 14+stone and 5' 9". He tried about 4 times to suplex me, but failed. Neither of us were submitted, but at least I was able to keep standing, which nullified his advantage (on the ground it probably would have been a lot more difficult for me).

I will, however, say that he was of a lower grade than me (me being a blue-belt, him being a green belt in jiujitsu) - but that only serves to further reinforce my points about technique.

    Hope I helped.

Sorry, I meant average for men. I accept that the "laydees" might be a bit lighter and skew the figure.

Im a 70 Kg fighter. In grappling situations I quite like working with bigger guys, the main thing I have found is that position becomes much more important when there is a size difference.

In wrestling being smaller means you can be faster at getting in on a guys hips so I concentrate on shooting in for single legs on bigger guys (As opposed to clinching or throwing)

On the ground I would say being on top is the main objective so sweeps become more prominent. Also being smaller typically makes it easier to pass the guard and keep the back. A good approach could be to look at the advantages of being smaller and then stick to them. On bigger guys I would tend to look for this sequence:

Single leg - pass the guard - force the back position (bigger guys tend to escape side and mount more easily)

If I am on my back in guard, the main thing to remember is to keep him off your hips so the open guard is a good idea. With bigger guys I tend to work this sequence in my head from guard:

Get to open guard - look for the sweep or get up to my feet - then finally if I cant achieve that go for a sub.

Also being smaller obviously means exploding out of side control and mount is harder, but it makes hip escapes a bit easier.

What im saying is probably a load of sh*te tho, best to watch marcelo garcia and just try and be him.

as i'm 125kg my defence for your plan would be

    1) when you shoot for the leg sprawl you clean true the mat

    2)kneel on your face

3 wrist lock and armbar you at the same time, while drinking a cup of tea

    :D

All easily countered by simply having my cornerman waft a pie around outside the cage, then locking in a RNC as you wander zombielike towards the delicious pastry.

my double chin choke defence would stop you, and the pie would give me strength, plus i'd kill you and the reff for being near my pie,
