Fake Garda Warning in Circulation

Apologies Mods if I've posted this in the wrong area.

Has anyone else received an email pretending to be from a concerned person warning about a new gang that's leaving an abandoned baby seat with a fake baby in it at the side of the road?

A friend of mine was sent it this morning (see below). It read like a fake to me but to be sure I called the Garda press office who told me they had heard about it doing the rounds but it was nothing to do with them.

Apart from causing genuine fear, what could possibly be the reason for writing something like this? Don't we have enough to be worried about on the roads without the threat of a marauding gang waiting to "drag you into the woods, beat and rape you and leave you for dead".

    Email Received
The following text (everything after the dotted line) is lifted directly from the email being sent around Ireland at present.

    ——————————————————————-

This is currently in circulation by the Gardai….

BEWARE – Garda warning when driving.!!

“While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the gardai and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the gardai advised even before they went out there to check…. “

“There are several things to be aware of … gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women)to stop their vehicle and get out of the car.

“There is a gang initiation reported by the local gardai where gangs are placing a car seat by the road…with a fake baby in it…waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby.

“Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person — woman — will be dragged into the woods, beaten and raped, and usually left for dead. If it’s a man, they’re usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, too.

DO NOT STOP FOR ANY REASON!!! DIAL 999 AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW, BUT DON’T EVEN SLOW DOWN.

“IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSCREEN, DO NOT STOP TO CHECK THE CAR, DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND DO NOT SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5%, AND YOU ARE THEN FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF THESE CRIMINALS.

THIS IS A NEW TECHNIQUE USED BY GANGS, SO PLEASE INFORM YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES.

THESE ARE DESPERATE TIMES AND THESE ARE UNSAVOURY INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL TAKE DESPERATE MEASURES TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.”

Please talk to your loved ones about this. This is a new tactic used. Please be safe.

Get started NOW — SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES TO BE CAREFUL AND AWARE OF EVERYTHING AROUND THEM SO AS NOT TO BECOME A VICTIM.

    Google "hoax abandoned baby gang"

Its English. I have gotten it twice with "Police" instead of "gardai"

Solution, run over any babyseats you see on the road, that'll stop the devious bastards in their tracks

It's very odd that you should start this thread today.

Last night I was driving into town and about 30 yards down the road I saw a buggy abandoned on the footpath. Didn't know what to make of it and kept going.

EDIT: Just read the email and this buggy I saw was abandoned on the footpath going past a field.

To be fair I don't think I'd call it a fake Garda warning. Sounds more like a person relaying what they were told by a Garda when they rang up the station.
I called the gardai and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the gardai advised even before they went out there to check….

I can't imagine why anyone would bother their hole making up all of that for no reason.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

To be fair, it contains reasonable advice as far as I can see.

Are you sure its fake? I heard the warning on the news of the local radio station being given by a guard. Said to contact the local station immediately if a baby seat was seen abandoned at the side of the road.

What station and when? I'd like to see if it's available online.

He probably said this because too many people were coming to the station complaining that the Gards were doing nothing about this thread.

And it's 100% clear that the warning is a hoax. The sentence

is a clear indication of that. There has never ever been any legitimate mail with this sentence in it.

It was on i102-104 (local station in the west/north west). It was on one of the news bulletins earlier in the week.

Urban myths like all these stupid e mails that do that rounds, find one actual concrete case were some one was robbed or beaten after being lured from their car by a fake baby in a baby seat,if such a think actually happened Joe duffys phone would be hopin' and Adrian kennedy would have every taxi drive in Dublin on the line reporting sitings! :D

Why aren't the women robbed as well ?
And God forbid if a crowded bus stops for a look at the fake baby....all that raping and and robbing........

And another thing...what guard measured the visibility rating of an egg-covered windscreen to come up with the "up to 92.5%" visibility impairment rating?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭Motorcheck

Surely it would depend on the size of the egg :D

Their news is like the Daily Mirror/The Sun in fairness. Pure gossip station that I wouldn't take seriously at all.
