Input 1 & 2 behaving odd with poor picture

I've just returned home after a week away & the kids are complaining that some of the channels are breaking up on the Sky HD box & some not available - system was fine a week or so ago.

When I look at the inputs, I'm getting a stronger than usual signal on input 1.

These are the odd bits though:

    *When I'm on RTE, TV3 etc I get a great signal on input 1 & 2

*When I'm on Sky1, picture is broken or non existent & good signal on input 1, but nothing at all on input 2

*When I'm on Sky movies, I get no signal on input 1, but a good signal on input 2

I've swapped the input cables over & get the same result, also switched to spare outputs on the LNB (Octo) and get same result & changed cables over from Humax to HD & again same result. I also have a Sky+ box & get great signal on both inputs for that one & no picture break up on any channels & records while watching no probs.

The Sky HD is a Thomson running from a standard Sky dish with an Octo LNB - as the other box & the Humax are working fine, is this a prob with the Thomson box ??

Any thoughts greatly appreciated before I spend the day on the phone to Sky

How old is the box? Most of the early Thomson HD boxes gave well documented problems eventually due to dodgy power supply if memory serves me.

same here on thomson hd box, break up of picture especially when it rains, might get ladder out to see if anything has shifted.

Sky Bombay just ran through the script & then tried to charge €65 for a call out - thanks to the poster who advised the cancellation threat as it suddenly became free !!!!

    Interestingly enough - whilst I can't get sky1 I can get sky1 HD - methinks box is very I'll

If it's out of warranty I presume they will try to sell me a new one ? Any better options ?

They are on different transponders so would be different anyway. Do you also have problems with Sky 2, Sky 3 and Sky Arts 2? They share the same transponder as the standard definition Sky 1.

Sounds like the box, but try your other box on both cables to rule out cable fault.

could be the power supply fault. (needs new capacitors)
    some more info here

I replaced my power supply 2 years ago and not had many probs since.

Cables are fine - I have a Humax sitting next to it and swapped cables.

    As for sky2 & 3 - same problem as sky 1
