I was thinking about .22 ammo types and was wondering about two rounds that i dont think are made yet, but they could very useful or effective.
the first is a .22lr like the cci stinger except firing a 32/30gr ballistic tip.
the second idea is a sub sonic .22wmr, firing a 50/55gr lead hollow point.

so there my two brain waves what are you opinions on them? do you think they would be of any use or just a gimick? :D

Don't know about the Ballistic Tip 22lr idea but I would think if it could have been done by now it would have.

As for the Sub-Sonic 22wmr, it kind of defeats the purpose of the 22wmr which is basically a 22lr with extra case capacity for more powder to produce greater muzzle velocity. If you are going to shoot sub-sonic ammo in 22 you might as well shoot the 22lr. I suppose if you already have a 22wmr it might makes sense to you, but not to a manufacturer.

Would the round still have the velocity to expand at sub-sonic speeds????

And the wind will effect a 30/32gr head twice as much as the 40gr rounds even if it's traveling at super-sonic speeds like 1600fts

You can already get subsonic 60gr .22lr rounds but the problem is accuracy, they don't stabilise very well in conventional .22 barrels they need a tighter twist.

I've often wondered if the apparent inaccuracy of high velocity .22lr was due to the twist rate being calculated for standard velocity. We often hear about twist rates for centrefire but don't recall RF twists mentioned.

I think the usual twist for .22 is 1:16" not 100% on that but thats what comes to mind.
It is an interesting topic though, the target guys usually shoot subs for accuracy and the whole transsonic thing probably makes a mess of the accuracy anyway.
Plus I don't imagine it is easy to get .22lr barrels in other twists that easily anyway.

A lot of the trouble with in accuracy with supersonics is actually at the moment it goes through the sound barrier it wobbles a bit then steadies up afterwards, so if your round is breaking the barrier at the same distance that your shooting at your going to get wild groups.
