It's orientation week, you go to a few talks, meet a few people, go out that night and get hammered and then repeat it for the rest of the year week. Enjoy.

Just chill, enjoy everything, don't panic and if you need help contact the SU,
The talks are very comprehensive, and it starts off slow, so you'll be grand.

yeah ill chill i suppose, no point being nervous about it?

I have a few friends that did the course you'll be doing this year and they found it very good and interesting.A lot of them after finishing it then applied to do various science courses in the college for example general science and there having a great time with that too, best of luck for Monday.

thanks very much Ian Beale. ps. are any of your friend loking to get rid of their books ;):D

what does everyone wear. do ya have to get dressed up on your first day?

Are you gonna be the guy in the suit??;)
It's a foundation year we are doing, no doctorate:p
I think we should try to blend in somehow and then start infiltrating :D

    In response to your questions:

Wear normal casual clothes. The type you'd wear if you were off to Dublin City with your friends - jeans, hoodies, t-shirts etc. You're not in secondary school anymore, but I don't recommend showing up in a suit or anything. If you have your own style (e.g. goth/emo/punk) then just go with that then. Be yourself.

With regards to books, I wouldn't be so eager to buy them. I made it through college without buying more than 3 books - all 3 of which were bought in first year and quickly sold on because I realised I'd wasted my money ;)

well i was gonna wear a suit then take it off to scrub in. but i like your idea better. dress like a tramp you say?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34 aoife24

ooook.. blending in might not be that easy indeed;)
but after emotionally hard first day, getting drunk in a pub with a loads of 18 years old fellows students .. you might still end up looking like tramp even with the suit on:p
    Good luck with the infiltration;)

    YES.

EVERYONE should go to registration. Go go go. Just go. They'll sort you out when you get there. The last thing you should do is not go.

    Go go go.

Seriously, you should stop messing with people's heads, get to the point stop being so damn vague!

*edit* By the way, I am SO sorry about that, sometimes my sarcasm just gets the better of me ^^',

As far as I know they didn't use many books at all as the notes are very good and everything is explained very clearly, in all honesty all you'll need is an a4 pad and a pen. As for what you should wear, anything you like, honest to god you'll see some sights in maynooth :pac: TouchingVirus covered what to wear best, definitely skip the suit though it really isn't necessary :D

Let me guess them 3 books were 'Computer Theory', 'Big Java' and 'Discrete Structures, Logic and Computability'? They are also the only books I got and its the same story for the rest of my class.

Hah, close enough. Discrete Structures, Logic and Computability was one. There was a Java book, by Walter Savitch, but I forget it's name - Big Java doesn't ring a bell though. And I forget the third one.

Amazing how many of us fell into that trap :p

I done this exact course last year. Had great fun throughout and made some new freinds. We were told to get a few books, Maths, Biology, Computers (all 3rd level) and then Physics and Chemistry books with workbooks from the Leaving Cert.

Relax and enjoy the year, pace yourself too! Dont try and get too deep into some of the stuff straight off and get your tutorial days and times sorted asap. There were a few last year that got themselves messed up badly and then had to try and swap with people for various tutorials! Enjoy!

Whenever I hear "discrete structures", I just think of buildings painted in camouflage
