I shall be in County Cork in October. I hope to rent a car in the city centre area. Can someone advise.
    - Car rental firms in the city area.
    - Are there any irish firms?

Can one rent a car in Bandon, Clonakilty or Skibbereen?

Nearly all of the rental companies are based in the City. The majority of them are huddled together at the Airport business park, the exception being Enterprise car rental who are about a mile away in another business park. An Irish company would be Dooleys car hire, but the usual suspects are there too, Dollar Thrifty, Hertz, Budget, Sixt.

google gocar..... you can collect a car at two or three city centre locations and pay by the day (by the hour as well I believe)

If you are really insistent on collecting the car in the city centre then you could try these guys:

    Carental Ireland McCurtain Street Cork
43, MacCurtain Street County Cork, Ireland
    Tel: 021 4963456/4962277
    Fax: 021 4963561

However the airport is a 10-15 minute drive to the city centre, most car rental companies would facilitate a car drop off to a hotel. I know Budget & Enterprise do it for us in work. Also it's about €20 in a taxi from train station to the airport failing that & there are airport shuttle buses running from the city centre quays to the airport too.

I would be surprised if you could hire a car in West Cork, I think the Star garage in Bandon used to do them but it would make more sense to pick-up/drop off in Cork city/airport anyway.

You could always use AVIS which is operated by Johnson & Perrott.

Ladies and Gentleman. Many thanks for those tips. I'll do the rest myself with my instruments "Google" and "Email".

I fly into Cork Airport in October, family drives me to West Cork.
After a week I get the bus to Parnell Place, Cork. Thus my preference for a car rental in the city centre.

I know that most cars rental firms are at the airport. There is a great bus service to Cork airport.

Thanks again to those who have posted. Hopefully I'll post here about which firm and car I deal with. I used drive four hours daily on Bavarian Autobahns. I'd like to experience an irish motorway firsthand.

Expect to see many random, bizarre, and nonsensical things. No one will believe you at home when you tell them some of the things you've seen happen..

Maybe we could market the irish motorway experience as a comedy tourist attraction :D

In September I asked about car rental.

Today I picked up a car at Cork Airport. I've been on the M8 and M7 going as far as Kildare. Traffic volume was low (Bank Holiday weekend).
I had no bad experience so far..
Once again thanks to the persons who gave me tips about car rental in Ireland.
