Thinking about getting an ipad and was wondering if you can pull down a lot of content from say a magazine or newspaper app to read when you're out of wifi and 3g coverage on a flight or are you limited to using things like ibooks and games ?

Would you be allowed to use it? Or is it just Ryanair who don't allow "aircraft mode" enabled devices?

I used mine on Aer Lingus and Virgin flights no problem. Never knew Ryanair didn't allow aircraft mode devices.

I'll be flying Aer Lingus with mine next week, first trip since I got it... I've loaded it up with videos mostly :).

You might also want to grab Instapaper - you can then save content from webpages (both on the iPad and your desktop browser), various RSS readers (like Reeder, etc) and have it all set up for offline viewing (it even strips most of the crap out of the page and only keeeps the article and pics, etc). All you need to do is remember to open Instapaper and let it fully sync before you are out of WiFi/3G range.

I flew with Ryanair twice over the last week and used my iPhone in flight mode without any comment being made and another 4 times earlier this year. They say that phones must be switched off and all electronic devices cannot be used on takeoff or landing while the seatbelt light is on - that was their only restriction though.

Download the PressReader app and take up the free trial of 7 newspapers, Irish and International. Load up with your favourites and enjoy them on the flight.
