Taxi drivers not having change!!?!!?

This is taking the absolute piss! What is it these days with taxi drivers not having change? I take a taxi from the airport home and it came to around 26 euro. I attempt to pay with a 50 as thats all I had and the taxi driver says he doesnt have any change.. I offer to make it 30 so he could give me a 20 back, he didnt even have it!
I have learned my lesson after this happening on a few occassions. I'll ensure to ask the driver does he/she have change in future before agreeing to take the taxi, but I have a friend who this has happened to, I've lost count how many times in the last couple of months.

Am I wrong in expecting the driver to have change or should I ensure I've got the change to cover the fare before getting in!?

Yeah, it's ridiculous - chancing their arm I think usually.

Taxi driver was a knob end. Course they need to have change! Imagine walking into a store to buy 26€ worth of goods and they have no change?! If he doesnt have a float then dont pay! You can say you have no change either!

    Be patient. They'll have change.

You were stupid to give him 30. Should have given him 20 as it was his fault. If he refused it, tell him you're happy enough to call the Gardaí and ask their opinion.

    Cheek of the cúnt.

Taximen need two "skills" for their job; knowing how to get from A to B in the shortest time possible & having change on them. Most of them fail on at least one count.

I tell ya, if taximen had brians, they'd probably have a decent job.

    No change?

Ask him to drive you around in a circle until he uses up the 4 quid, or get him to buy you a sambo

Another thing I hate is if I'm a bit drunk or not paying attention they try to take the long way and if I call them out on it they act like they didn't know.

if its towards the end of his shift, then most likely he didn't have change! Think about it, hardly anyone pays with coins/exact fare they all give in 20/50's etc.

So, if taximen running out of change at the end of their shifts is aregular occurance, would it not be too much to expect them to carry more change to avoid this occurance?

Oh, wait.... yes it would, because they are thick as f*ck.

A Taxi is not a shop. Totally different. A shop has constant repeated sales therefore has cash flow. A Taxi has very limited customer flow therefore very little cash flow.

I drive a Taxi and was working this morning from 08.45 and by 2.30 I had earned €29, €8.50 of that was an account job Ill have to wait two weeks to get paid for it, at 2.30 I pulled in and put €30 of diesel into my taxi, I had to use €10 from my float to do that. The afternoon was no better, I did 2 account jobs and went home. I now have no cash apart from whats left in my float and will need diesel in the morning again, no idea where Im getting the money for it.

I understand that drivers need to have change but you have to understand that many drivers quite simply have no cash. If Im offered a €50 in the morning for a €10 fare I wont have the change.

Haha , get the fair for free.. are you kidding me?!?!
By chance, there was someone at home who was able to give me change to pay the fair. But on another occassion I wasnt as lucky, and had to drive to a petrol station to get change.

I thought there was no requirement to give change, and that shops etc only did it out of practicality.

Edit: thread on similar topic, this post in particular refers to the issue

Why dont you simply increase the size of your float then in change?

So, you worked 5 hours this morning, did 2 jobs in the afternoon, then gave up, went home & are now left wondering why you have no money for petrol?

F*cking hell. What do you expect?

not to sound like the usually taxi bashing that can go on, but if a customer said that to you, what would you do? would you leave them go ? i dont think so. so why shouldnt you have the change we should get back.

One taxi person once started giving out to me when I handed him a 20eur note and the bill was for around 8eur... He went off on "are you kidding me?! 20eur for such a small charge!!" and then got all abusive.

    It was weird...

If he has no change just get out and tell him to call to your house tomorrow for the money, with change. Anyone who falls for the no change con deserves to be ripped off.

If you don't have the change then tell the person at the start. Simple, no?

IOU. Everyone should keep the Regulator's Nr in their phones. A quick call will resolve these chancey dilemmas.

    I always give tips to taximen. Usually something like this;

    - You should clean your car more often
    - There's a quicker way to get here than the one you took
    - Your suspension needs fixing
    - You should talk less, it's irritating
    - If you worked harder, you'd make more money

Ive heard of instances where taxi drivers have had to pull into shops when on a fare and had to get change and then have the cheek to charge the customer for their stupidity. Wake the fcuk up, have change in your car, youre a taxi.

In fairness they should have change. There are plenty of banks and shops around during the day perfectly willing to give you change, I would say tough **** to the lad and leg it.

in fairness, I find alot of taxi drivers round down fares. I usually tip a few euro. If it was €17 or €18 I'd let him have the €20. It's nice when they say make it €15 when it's a €15.80 fare once in a while.
