Some of the guys here (Village Runner among them) have done up to 22 mile LSRs (that I remember). Tony Mangan spent 48 hours running on a treadmill. It wont by pretty, but is certainly a better choice than putting your life at risk!

As Tergat would point out, specificity is important, so make sure to do some of your long runs on the road. Don't aim to do them all on the dread-mill.

Done plenty of 20 plus miles on a threadmill. Great when tired/rain etc.........If this is possoble why not park at the gym and do 10 miles outside first. Grab gel/ drink and a changed top and hit the threadmill. Also try and start before 7 as unless your a fast one you wont get it done due to most gyms want you out by 9.30. If it will be later have them warned that you wont hold them up.
Nothing worse having 18 done and you feel under pressure to get off. Any excuse after 18 is whAT you want. Try the first 10 slow and last 10 at mararthon pace.

If you run on a treadmill make sure to have a 1% incline to replicate an outdoor run.
