Can anyone tell me what this little creature is? We saw our cat just sitting outside looking at something intently, and we found this little (big) guy. Looks like a moth, but absolutely huge. Here he is in comparison to a normal sized credit/debit card:

Looking at the UK Moths website it looks like a Convolvulus Hawk-moth. Mothman would probably be able to give you a more definite identification.

    Brilliant, a Convolvulus Hawk-moth.
There is an influx of these and other migrants moths including Death's Head Hawk-moth during the past few days.

Thanks for that, first record I have for Co. Kilkenny

Often a place they are found is on the clothes out on a line, possibly attracted by the scent.
Also they are particularly fond of tobacco plant (Nicotiana) and some moth enthusiasts plant this plant in the hope of attracting this species.

Funnily enough that picture was taken directly underneath our clothesline! Although there was no clothes hanging out at the time :o
