Help with 3 broadband speed????

    Hi,

I got a 3 dongle and repeater on trial. The speed is terrible with or without the repeater. In fact the repeater doesn't make any difference whatsoever. I have since handed back the dongle and repeater. At present I am using a landline with the up to 7mb package from vodafone. I am getting around 5.92 constant.

Money is an issue for me and as I have a mobile phone, I mainly use the landline for broadband. I would love to get rid of the landline, and if it were possible I'd love to go with mobile broadband. While I had the 3 dongle and repeater I was often just getting .3 of a meg, and on rare occasions it would go up to around 1mb. I naturally contacted 3 support. But was more than disappointed when they told me that if I got anything over .5 mb they were happy, which of course in my eyes is useless.

I also used the vodafone dongle on trial. With that the most I got was 1.5mb.

I am fully aware that mobile broadband is not as good as fixed line, but I would be very hapy if I could get a constant around 2.5mb from either.

Is their any outdoor repeater or antenna that actually works, and would give me this speed or thereabouts????

    Thanks:+)

3 are simply hopeless. I'm with them and the amount of times I've been on the phone to their "customer support" team is beyond a joke. The only way I get a somewhat decent level of service is by, and I'm not taking the piss here, dangling the repeater out of my upstairs bedroom and have the laptop next to the window. I do not get any service downstairs and none outside .

I'm in an area covered by the National Broadband Scheme so I've no choice to use the beyond useless 3. If eircom would bother getting up off their arses and upgrade our exchange then I know what I'd tell 3 to do with their "7.6Mb" service.

Thanks for your reply, I was sooo frustrated with 3. I have 2 brothers living about 2 to 2 1/2 miles on either side of me. One is getting a constant minimum of 2 1/2 with 3 and the other is getting between 3 and 4 megs constantly with 3. I also know a number of other people within the same radius and they also are getting a terrific reception from 3. But unfortunately where i live the signal is crap.

Most people feel the same as you do about 3, and after my experience with them and their support I agree totally with you. The reason I asked this question on here is merely a financial one, but as Pog Mo Thoin said I would be better off to stay with what works than messing with mobile. So for the near future at least I will stay with the fixed line broadband.

I hope eircom does something for you soon.

When I got my first computer and was dealing with dialup, on one occasion it took 3 3/4 hours just to get onto itunes website. Broadband in this country is a complete joke.

Just as I write this there is an ad for 3 on RTE LOL. No thanks LOL

Thanks so much for your reply

Take care and good luck +)

    To Ren2K7 + Paddy,

Hi mate, I've had umpteen amount of issues with 3 mobile, to the point I actually pulled out a little itty bit of my hair!

Im temporarily living in an area with ****E coverage, and my parents have been receiving the same sort of service, some days its fine, though the majority its just SLOW, or non functioning completely.

What I did which has now given me consistantly high speeds is place the dongle has HIGH as you can, no matter where you are. I've tried every concievable combination and since finding what works, I've not had one single issue for a month now, my net is always fast.

I bought a dongle reception extension cable . It cost about 20 euro's for the cable, but WELL worth it.

    Brand : Manhattan
Name : MH USB 2.0 Extension Active Cable 16ft.
(It can be bought in most electronic shops)

If you can in anyway run the cable up onto your roof, attach the dongle and slip a plastic bag over the dongle once connected (sealing off with black plumpers tape) then get ties to attach it to something up there.

YES it sounds like an extreme path to take, but I attached it to the chimney stack of our chimney and attached securely with plastic ties and the service has been consistant.

    The extension cable really helps.

    ;)

Yes but what gets me is the useless repeater boosters they are fitting. My friend is in the same boat. I think with three if you have no luck after a repeater has been fitted, then they should supply you a satellite broadband kit for free?

If You are an NBS customer, You cannot break the contract if You're signed up, even if it doesn't work, then You gotta wait for them to install satellite which really will drive You mad compared to the working dsl You already got.

But the satellite will be cheap, less than his land line rental. However you must live in an area that is not grey on this map otherwise three do not have to provide a functioning service. If they gave you a repeater then you are in an NBS area, they have 2 repeaters.

    1. Nextivity ( indoor) typically on a windowsill
    2. Coiler ( outdoor aerial) engineers installs it free if you complain enough

If neither works, satellite is next.

If neither works very well so satellite is usually next if you kept complaining

3 (NBS) put this box in for me after many complaints....

    Solid repeater - http://www.st.co.kr/en/product/MC_6.html

About 75% of the time, everything works ok and I get close to 1Mbs download speed during the day.

During the evening, network gets very congested and service can be poor....

BTW, my closest 3 basestation 8km away ....

That's terrible that they are installing these in ordinary houses. I wonder if it creates interference to other 3 Cells and Vodafone, Meteor and O2?

You know they are OBLIGED to give you an absolute minimum of 1.2Mbps or else the Satellite service (3Mbps)?

They are breaking the terms of the NBS contract and not entitled to the Taxpayer's mony to subsidize that phone mast.
