Work Golf Outing

Hi all, First time poster so be gentle... :D

My work is having a golf outing tomorrow and I am trying to figure the fairest format, that will get everyone involved. There are 12 of us of which there are 6/7 that have GUI handicaps. The rest can play but wouldnt be regular golfers.

I thought the fairest way to do it is to have teams of 2 scrambles (best drive, approach shot etc), pairing high with low. Give non golfers 28 handicaps and half the combined of the 2?

What do you think? any suggestions?

The work golf society I'm in is the same, most of the golfers are not great.

We organise it into 2 classes, class 1 has handicaps of 18 and below and then class 2 is anything above.

We just play a stableford competion, with prizes for 1st and 2nd in each class. It works quiet well, but saying that there are people who will never win anything, but they are people who couldnt play to a handicap of 50!

We allocate penalty points which apply to the next event, 2 for the winner and 1 for 2nd. These are then taken off their score in the next event.

    Hope this helps.

Teams of 2 scrambles with a high & low may not work too well as the high handicapper will have very few shots counting. Maybe those teams of 2 but with best stableford of the 2 to score on each hole, or a variation of this (eg both to score on 18th & 9th).

The problem with playin a conventional outing ie a stableford comp over 18 holes for your group is that there seem to be about 50% who are not regular players and have no hope of winning.

Even if you split them into two classes the Class 2 guys - the non golfers would be very slow and hold up the proceedings.

I would suggest scramble teams of three - you would 4 groups from your 12 players.

Pair them so you get a good/mediocre/poor golfer in each group and have a rule that must select the Drive of each player on 3 holes.

Every body then can "contribute" and feel they have a chance of getting a prize.

Best of luck with the day...what course are you playing ?

Cheers Fulton Crown. That seems like the best format. I agree that letting the non golfers play may hold the show up. Thats what I am trying to avoid. Limerick Golf Club, should be good craic

Another variation on the scramble thing that may work is that the ball you elect to play cannot be played by the person who hit it there. It means that the low golfer dominates even less. It prob works better with teams of 4 rather than three, which can be more fun in a scramble anyway, but u know best what will work from a social and enjoyment aspect with your own group

Our small work society takes 2 shots of the previous winners handicap. And still the good golfers win while the not-so good ones keep plugging away. We always play stableford.
