Pasted below a snippet from apple's new app guidelines for developers and what for me makes Apple the company for the user.

Okay, so while Apple's tone throughout the guidelines is extremely direct, the highlights definitely come from the introduction, where the company basically lays it down:

    - "We have lots of kids downloading lots of apps, and parental controls don't work unless the parents set them up (many don't). So know that we're keeping an eye out for the kids."
    - "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps."
    - "We have lots of serious developers who don't want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour."
    - "If your app is rejected, we have a Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps."
    - "This is a living document, and new apps presenting new questions may result in new rules at any time. Perhaps your app will trigger this."
    - "If it sounds like we're control freaks, well, maybe it's because we're so committed to our users and making sure they have a quality experience with our products."

"If it sounds like we're control freaks, well, maybe it's because we're so committed to our bottom line we like to exercise ridiculous control over our revenue streams and proactively use our TOS to sideline our competitors without any regard for our users and their experience"

Thats what they meant to say if they were being honest....

    That doesn't make any sense.

No regard for their users? Who do you think Apple make their money from? Us. If we aren't happy, we don't buy another iPhone/iPad, and Apple make no money. Apple believe they are preserving the experience of their users by keeping tight control over the App Store. This means that when you go to buy an app you don't have to wade through crap to find something decent. As a result, their users are happy and are more likely to purchase from the App Store, and in turn, decide to continue using Apple products.

Are Apple primarily committed to the bottom line? Yes, but that's so obvious it doesn't need stating - they are business. However, they are a business that make their profits by selling to consumers. So caring about the bottom line and caring about their users is the same thing. Apple need to keep their users happy if they want to keep a healthy bottom line. Not all their users like this, but they are free to go buy something else instead.

Don't think it has anything to do with the number of apps - it's simply because the absolute pinnacle of Farts apps has been reached :P:

And yes, it actually is on the App Store:
