The long wait - new license

    Hi guys,

Applied for my license mid June and am still waiting. I know there's going to be a bit of a delay and I know renewals were happening over the summer but what miffs me off a bit is that a few guards say I should have received a letter confirming that my application has been received - but nothing. I spoke to a sergeant in Galway city the last day and she says she'll keep an eye and call me (...not holding hope for that)

Anyhow - at what point should I be kicking up a little bit more about this? After the 3 month mark to the day? Is it superintendent or CPO I should be chasing? Or even the guard at my local station? None of my references have been called but a friend of mine says he sees it on pulse with 'in progress' (has been like that for 7 weeks)

I'm also eager as heck to get out and enjoy some duck hunting before too long.

    Thanks guys,

Am going to give it a few days and start my calls again. Im hoping to strike a fine balance between annoying them and getting them to get something done. In 2 weeks my 3 months will be up anyways so I hope that might give me a bit of leverage

go in to the station and they should be able to check their computer and see if its been sent away or being processed.
you could also ring the head office in dublin and the will put you on to the firearms computer guys who can tell you what stage you licence is at, that is what i did they had sent the payment form but i never got it so they sent another and i got it in two days

You really should call to your local station first. All Dublin will be able to tell you is whether it's on the system or not. If it's not, there's not much they can do about it, but call your station which will look like going over their heads to them.

Not the most diplomatic solution. On the other hand if you call to the station, they'll be able to do the same thing and do something about it if it's not on the system: track down the form or get you to fill a new one if it's lost.

And lost happens quite a bit. My local lost one belonging to a club member (they just misfiled it by accident), apologised to him and rushed it through when they found it.

Nobody's nose was out of joint, they put their hands up and told him he was OK to continue using the firearm as it was their mistake.

Can't be fairer than that really.

As rrpc says above, lost and missfiled happens a lot. The last time I was in with the super he found several missing files in my folder.

I agree with you, local Guards do NOT like you going above there heads one bit, or telling them how to do there job !!

I have tried various approaches to dealing with them and find that the best thing to do is be thankful, only slightly push them in the direction you want them to take, sympathise with them for all the hard work and hassle the licences cause them, and again be thankful :)

Thanks again for the feedback guys....

Was trying to call the local station today but no answer. Just got the 'private number' call just now and it was the local guard. Says the application was lost and I need to resubmit some of the details again but it'll be fast tracked as much as possible.

Oh well - could be worse. At least I know where I stand now anyhow
