Health service at breaking point- good or bad?

I have experience of health systems around the world but I have never experienced a health system quite like that here in Ireland. From a primary care ie GP perspective, care seems almost non-existent in Ireland as things stand. Problems that should be managed in primary care are instead diverted into a 'bulging at the seams' referral system because the resources are not available for the GPs to manage these conditions themselves- hypertension/ diabetes to name 2 of the most important. Instead the necessary funds seem to be funnelled into a more costly specialist run service.

This is just speculation, but has this system been created to serve the specialists rather than the patients? Is it in their interests to have huge public service back logs, thus ensuring a healthy demand for their private more lucrative services. Just how much time do they spend in the public hospitals trying to resolve the huge lists? Or, in this ever increasing (now the second most litigious system in the world) solicitor feeding profession, do they only reside in marble clad private hospitals. They are reported to be the best paid specialists in the world, superceding those in the US.

Just wondering were the power/emphasis/money really resides when thinking about health provision for the people of Ireland. I suspect I know.

If you knew how few of the regulars on this forum have a boss in Ireland, you'd see how dumb that statement is. Most of us are overseas or GPs!

How does that change what I mean. Notice a pattern, you don't respond to the message either.

Well, I know my Ozzie boss doesn't lose much sleep when I tell him how crappy things are in Ireland!

The Irish based posters are conspicuously few. Still haven't seen your comments Aussie vs Irish.
