Restoring iPhone 4 v4.0.1 with the same OS version

I am looking for instructions how to restore an iPhone 4 originally on 4.0.1 to the same 4.0.1 version. Reason: I pressed reset & erased all content.

    1. Phone was never upgraded so this is not downgrading.
    2. Phone was never jail broken.
    3. No SHSH blobs have ever been backed up.
    4. I have the relevant phone firmware file (***_Restore.ipsw) stored on my computer

I'm so sick of people posting wrong advice, Ill say it again once and for all

The SHSH blobs are used to downgrade you phone from a higher firmware version to a lower one. So for example, you have firmware 4.0.1, and you accidentally upgrade to 4.1 you can add saurik's server to your host file and downgrade.

If however you have not upgraded your phone and you simple wish to restore to your current firmware version, you simple download it, and do a shift click restore (click on restore while holding down the shift key), this will prompt you with a window where you can select your firmware file and restore as normal.

We have gone over this about 6 times now, so mixednuts, unless you know what you are talking about, please refrain from giving advice, especially the advice you gave the OP, not only unhelpful but panic educing.

YES, you can restore your firmware to the current version without shsh blobs on file. If you are on version 4.0.1 and you wish to restore you firmware without upgrading, you are permitted to do so.

The procedure is to download the firmware you need and save it to your desktop.

    Iphone 4: http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/061-8619.20100715.4Pnsx/iPhone3,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

    iPhone 3gs: http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/061-8618.20100715.Zapn4/iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

next connect you phone to itunes and wait for it to be recognised. In the summary tab, click the restore button while holding down the shift key in windows or the option key in mac, by that i mean the actual keys on the keyboard.

Select the firmware you just downloaded and continue as normal, activate your phone as normal.

    Plu,
I apologise as I mis-read your post and gave you some incorrect advice .
Your phone can be restored to its current version as you have not updated, just point your iTunes (hold shift - press restore) to the .ipsw file posted by KJL .

    KJL,
We are all so sorry that "your so sick of people posting wrong advice," ..Not !

Get off your high horse , and by the way .. "I dont know what I am talking about, and will refrain from giving advice "

kjl - lose the attitude. I have warned you before, I won't warn you again.

You can make a point without the attitude.

Quick question, a mate of mine just jailbreaked his 3gs 3.13 but has been finding it very slow and at times no responsive since the jail break, as he needs the unlock, can he use this method and update to 4.01 and try the JB again.

Just done it this way and it works.

I download 4.01 for my 3GS as it was already on 4.01 but giving issues

Using umbrella I pulled my shsh's form cydia to local pc
Start TSS server in umbrella that pointed gs.apple.com to my local pc
Held shift and hit restore and pointed at the 4.01 and it worked.

I tried restoring it with my shsh files with it pointing at apple properly and it failed, i then tried restoring with gs.apple.com pointign at cydia and that failed too.

so you had shsh saved on cydia for 4.0.1 ?

Correct - I tried it without pointing the phone at cydia or local shsh's and it failed when trying to get approval from apple.

But didn't it say earlier that SHSH files are ONLY needed for downgrading. You had SHSH files saved. This thread is about a situation where no SHSH files are saved anywhere.

Why I gave my example was - I tried to go from 4.01 to 4.01 as you asked in the first post without using my backed up shsh files and it would not work.

Sorry folks, the attitude is coming from the fact that I'm paralysed here today, hurt my neck really bad last night and litrally can't move.

Jamesd you actually started the last thread about this and the response was different

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055999355

I too thought you had to set up the server, but we were proved wrong on this.

Yes in that thread viclemronny said he did it and it worked, Did not work for me today at all.
Ive done an 3GS upgrade from 3.13 to 4.01 with the hosts pointed to Cydia last friday night and worked no bother, but today was my first 3GS going a 4.01 to 4.01 and with the hosts towards Cydia and with the hosts to apple it would not work - It only worked with the shsh files locally.

Is it possible that apple were still signing 4.0.1 when viclemronny restored without shsh. Tbh I've never heard of it workin for anyone only the previous mentioned poster and 2 others in the unlocking thread. But all of them were just after 4.0.2 came out

Could it right as apple stopped signing 4.01 on the 21st August.
    Referance here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=997322
And viclemronny did his before that date.

Thought so. So as it stands it's not possible to restore to the same firmware after apple stop signing it, unless ya have blobs saved

Correct and I have tried this Friday and it failed to restore until I pointed to the blobs.

    KJL,
I will take my apology in a written form , please pm for address ;)

I think the OP hadn't got a bricked phone , just deleted data so a restore would have been unnecessary and a bit extreme .

Maybe better advice (me inc) could have put this to bed within 2 posts .
